Renaming issue, rename text box stuck [#21160]

Post by vegright »

Renaming track title, then moving to next track before GUI catches up and trying to rename newly selected track title will sometimes causes GUI to no longer allow renaming. Sometimes it will fake allow you to rename (i.e. looks like you are changing the text, but enter does not update database and edit text box stays in place even when scrolling or changing views). I've found this to be an issue with track numbers as well as track title. I have not tested other fields. Renaming can be initiated either by mouse or F2, but for me mouse reproduces faster. To resolve this stuck text box, I have to close MM and restart. Note the rest of GUI still appears to work, just rename no longer works.

Example of rename issue and scrolling after to show that text box is in the same position, it just did not move with scroll:

Note I have only reproduced this in "List (by Album)" mode. "List" mode and "Browser" mode do not appear to be affected, as these seem faster from a GUI response perspective.

This also happens more often when a reorder of tracks happen (I think because GUI take longer to update). I get the reorder renaming track title (sorted by album artist) since I am operating 2 sets of files (different directories, mp3 and flac) in the same album, so a reorder sometimes happens within the track number. A view with more albums listed also helps with reproducing.

This is more of an annoyance, I am only reporting because I ran into this rename issue 10 times today.

I have also seen where the previous track title will get copied into the next track (no <CTRL-V> used) when using F2 to rename (I have not seen this issue these when using mouse rename). This is not easily reproducible, you have to be really fast, though I reproduced it twice when running the above tests.

Which Build (Help > About) of MediaMonkey are you seeing this with?

Please capture this in both a debug log (step 4b) and screencast (if possible) and attach the log to Support Ticket: https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86643 (screencast will need to be shared via online share).

This will help a developer analyze why this happens on your setup.

Ticket created (sorry, did not write ticket number down or save the link). Also found an easily reproducible method.

Hi Vegright,

I've tried, unsuccessfully, to replicate this, but in truth, I'm not sure that I understand the repro steps. I tried as follows:

1 Navigate to Music > Location > Directory > All [List by Album | Column filter active]
2 Select an Album Artist in the Column filter
3 Select track 2 from AlbumA, Press F2 (or click again to activate edit mode), and rename the Title, ENTER
4 Select track 3 from AlbumA, Press F2 (or click again to activate edit mode), and rename the Title, ENTER
--> Success in both cases
5 Select track 4 from AlbumA, Press F2 (or click again to activate edit mode), and rename the Title without pressing ENTER
6 Use wheelmouse to scroll
--> edit mode is exited and the edit is lost!!
7 Set the view so that albums are displayed 'collapsed'
8 Expand an album, select track 5, Press F2 (or click again to activate edit mode) and rename the title, ENTER
--> The view refreshes and collapses the album!!

The first bug is relatively minor (the edit shouldn't be lost), and the second is pretty annoying, but it sounds as if you're experiencing something more severe in which editing Track2 causes Track 3 to be modified (though I wonder if this might be somehow related to albums collapsing as in the second bug).

Can you provide more detailed steps (or a video) so that we can better understand how to replicate this?

Thanks!

I found the Ticket that I opened. Sorry about that, Ticket #7458. Log included in ticket.

I confirmed that this still exists with 3044, I will update the ticket to reflect that. Listed in Ticket #7458, I found an easier way to reproduce.

Steps:
Double click to start playing a song
Single click to enter edit mode
QUICKLY switch to another track by clicking on it
Rename text box is should now be stuck open

I sometimes have to do this a couple of times to get the rename text box to get stuck.

Really strange... I can't replicate this at all (and not for lack of trying). Hopefully the logs you provided will give the devs a hint.

Sadly, I missed a step for the quick reproduction.

1) double click to start a new song.
2) click same songs title to edit (as fast as this is allowed, approximately one second)
3) all text of title is highlighted at this point, click in the title somewhere to edit (sometimes this highlight will go away and cursor will go where it is supposed to, other times it will stay highlighted). Sorry, this is what I missed, I have an essential tremor, so I did not know it was happening (i.e. the click into the edit box).
4) click out of the edit to another song

I captured a video. Hope you do dropbox, as I do not like installing unknown apps. I will post in the ticket. I also enabled mouse highlighter (PowerToys), so you can see when mouse clicks.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm still unable to replicate so I suspect it's related to timing in certain environments.

Over the last few days, I recently upgraded my PC. I can no longer reproduce. I have most of my software installed that I normally use. Though I have yet to get Hyper-V or WSL (which is why Hyper-V is installed) going. Previous PC was not slow or anything (i9-9940X), so I do not thing that was it. Well, if during my install, MediaMonkey starts having the same issue, I will report what I installed around that time.

Thanks for the update. fyi, although we couldn't replicate this, a code review revealed an issue that might have been the cause and it's since been fixed (in build 3046+).

Thanks!
