Tracks playing in wrong order after update

Post by Robotron2084 »

After updating to the latest version of MMW, when I play tracks from an album, they now play in alphabetical order rather than track order.

All my tags are fine (I've used MMW for several years now, mostly as a tag editor).

Any help gratefully received, thanks. :D

Can you describe how you play an Album (please be as detailed as possible, including View used)? Make sure sorting is on Album instead of Title.

Hi Lowlander, thanks for helping.

The view is 'List'. Regarding sorting, I didn't even know this was a thing until I encountered this issue. Previously, clicking the column on the list to change the order (for example, track # ascending) has always played the tracks in that order.

So, in this instance, to play an album I am going into a folder containing the album, selecting the tracks in Windows with CTRL-A, and pressing enter (or clicking 'open with Media Monkey').

I've added the '#' column to the List view while I try to figure out why MMW is playing the tracks this way;

As you can see the sort order (column 1) isn't the same as the track number (column 7).

EDIT: The screenshot is a compilation album, but I'm experiencing the same issue with single artist albums. I just want them to play in track # order. :)

Also, I don't think they're playing in alphabetical order, just whatever order they are sorted into when they load up.

So the problem occurs when playing from File Explorer? If so, are the files sorted correctly in File Explorer and are you using right click on the first file (Track 1) in File Explorer?

Also, which Build (Help > About) of MediaMonkey are you using?

Yes, I only play files from Windows File Explorer. It makes no difference if I right-click the first file, press enter or select 'open' from File Explorer once the files are selected. This has only happened since updating MMW.

The files are showing in the correct order in File Explorer if I sort by track number, though I do not have track numbers in the filenames of any of my music. This has always been the case, and MMW has played them in file# order according to the tags, when sorted that way on the list display.

Previously, I've been able to select a number of files in File Explorer and open them, and MMW would play them in whatever order I sorted them in the list display. If I changed that sort order during playback (for example, from artist name to track name) it would then continue playing, but in the new order. Now it just plays them in the order decided by column 1 on my screen shot.

Build is 2024.0.0.3082.

Many thanks again. :)

I have just checked an older version (5.0.5.2695) that's installed on another computer, and it works perfectly - changing the sort order will change the playback order of the tracks on the fly as expected.

EDIT: I've uninstalled 2024.0.0.3082 and reinstalled 5.0.5.2695 on my main computer and it's now working as before (ie, as above). I'm guessing a bug in the current version, then?

Can you please capture this in a debug log (step 4b) and attach the log to a Support Ticket: viewtopic.php?t=86643

My tracks order this way when added to the play list: 1, 10, 11, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 for an album with 11 tracks. The version I'm using is 2024.1.0.3113.

Any ideas?

Can you please detail the exact steps? Files are added in the order they're showing. Are you maybe adding files from File Explorer? Screenshots can help explain what you're doing.

Have you tried to do Zero pad Track #? eg. 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11

That's how you get MM to play tunes in the correct order? Seems kind of lame.

It depends how you look at it, some prefer Alpha Numeric ordering (1,10,2,21,3,...) and some prefer Natural numeric ordering for Numeric only fields (1,2,3,4,...10,...), Track # can contain both eg. A1, B2 (for vinyl ordering) or 1/21, 8/15 for total track ordering (to see if Album is complete), some again like Zero Padded (Me included) as that resolve also filename sorting in folders.
