CD playback track transitions [#21494]

Post by mmytunez »

When playing audio CDs MM lets the CD drive spin down after it has read what it needs of the current track. At the beginning of the next track the CD drive spins up again and MM starts to read the new track. This produces a gap in the audio output and it sometimes sounds like the first few notes of the new track are then speeded up. This happens regardless of whether the CD has silences between the tracks or is continuous music. The result is almost tolerable for the former but unlistenable for the latter. Playing the same CDs on the same PC with the Media Player that comes with Widows and the CD drive runs continuously and playback is as expected, with seamless track transitions for continuous pieces.

I have tried all of the three MM output plugins.

CD drive is connected via USB port.

I could just give up and use Media Player for CDs but would prefer to use MM which is where my digital music library lives.

Hi,
does this issue happen even if you check checkbox
[x] Remove silence at the beggining / end of track
in Options > Player > Playback Rules ?

Hi,
What version of MMW you use?

I've tested on MM 2024.1.0.3104 and several continuous CDs and on 3 different Drives (1 internal and 2 USB) without success all play normally without gaps.
Here are my settings:

If Gap/Overlap at 0s produce issue, can you test with Overlap 0.5s?

Also Make sure you are playing in exact CD order

Thanks for suggestions.
I have MM 2024.0.0.3082
All playback rules are set the same as yours.
I've now tested with two different PCs and two different CD drives but same results as before.
Both drives connect via USB but one has its own power supply which means it spins up faster at track transitions and there is less of a pause, but it is still there. With the USB-powered drive a little MM message box pops up briefly during the track change which says "Buffering On".
With Media Player the 'read' light on both CD drives stays on all the time and there is no gap in playback - it is obviously 'talking' to the CD drive differently.
I've checked the power settings on both PCs and the "USB selective suspend setting" is disabled.
Not sure what else to try.

Hi,
Hmm, very very interesting. Can you please let me know models of drives you use, maybe I can find them for testing.

Do you use USB HUB or direct connection?

Sorry for all the bothering and frustration, but you are only one reported such problem in 10+ years (I had similar issue with my mixed CDs 15+ years ago), so to better understand what is going on can you please open support ticket and attach ZIP with debug log according to viewtopic.php?f=30&t=86643

CD drives are connected to the computer USB port directly.
Neither has visible branding. Powered drive shows up as "ATAPI DVD A DH20A3P USB Device" in Device Manager (it is an older IDE 'internal' DVD writer mounted in a caddy with USB connection). The USB-powered drive shows up as "TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633A USB Device"
I will work my way through the instructions for raising ticket / submitting log.
Thanks again.

This should be fixed in build 3110. Thanks for reporting!
