TAGS BEHAVING ODDLY

Post by DRHaynes »

Current version: MediaMonkey Gold 2024.2.1.3213 (running as administrator)
Windows 11 Pro version 25H2

I am encountering what seems to be strange behavior when editing song properties. After scanning I notice that some albums - or certain songs within an album - are "missing" some properties, such as song title, artist, and so forth. When I look at the album folder in Windows File Explorer those property tags are not present.

Here is the strange behavior: I can correct the missing metadata using MediaMonkey Property editor, and sometimes the files reflect those corrections in File Explorer, but sometimes the tags are not written to the song files (still missing in File Explorer). I can add the tags using an outside app (Audacity, for example) and the added metadata shows in File Explorer but sometimes these updates disappear again when scanned, or when using MediaMonkey Property editor (?!) and sometimes I will use MediaMonkey Property editor to correct one song and the result is that the metadata for other songs in the folder disappears.

I have read forum posts about updating tags and tried all recommendations. I made sure all folder and files are owned by me and that all have full read/write permissions in Windows 11, and I'm running MediaMonkey as administrator. I have attempted using the Property editor, then rescanning and have used the Edit Tags > Update Tags command, but the metadata is still missing in File Explorer. I have used the Manage database tool to clear the database, uninstalled MediaMonkey and then reinstalled using the latest application download, then rescanned the entire library (what a pain!) - none of these have resolved the issue.

I am baffled by this - has anyone else experienced similar odd results or have any suggestions?

It generally is:
1) Some file corruption, please attach an affected file to a Support Ticket to analyze.

2) Windows right, MediaMonkey (the Windows User it's running as) doesn't have rights to modify the file.

3) The File Type doesn't support the tags. In this case tags will be database only.

Lowlander - thank you for the quick reply.

I attempted to attach one of the files but they all exceed the 5mb size limit - is there a way to supply a larger file (>30mb)?

Here is additional information that may apply:

Generally the files are .WAV (not all are...).
Some were scanned from commercial CD.
Some are songs I ripped from DVD.
Some are from recordings I made using Audacity.
All song files I created originally had embedded metadata for Album, Title, Artist, etc. but some of that metadata disappeared.

WAV has poor tagging support, FLAC also lossless is a better format when it comes to maintaining tags.

You can upload to any Cloud Service (like OneDrive) and include a link to the shared file in your Support Ticket. Also include what tags you were editing and failed to save to the file.
