Netgear plugin + FreeDB

Post by Pontus Berg/Guest »

Howdy!

I would like to add two items to the wishlist;

* Using Amazon for looking up tags work fairly poorly for me. I would like to be able to retire Tag&Rename in favour of only using MM for all my collection management, and for this support for looking up tags also from existing collection (not only while ripping) would be necessary

* In order to play my music in the house, I use a Netgear MP101. The server software that comes with it is REALLY poor (slow and stability is not a key advantage either). An MM plugin to have it work as an MP101 server would be MOST appreciated.

[Sorry - Slightly corrected]

Other lookup services for on PC files has been requested. CDDB is comercial and requires licensing fees and FreeDB is dying, but these and several other services have been requested.

There have been requests for uPnP (don't know what netgear uses) support and the ability for MediaMonkey to function as a server for networked devices. Main problem here is that it's often a per device solution and often involves closed source solutions. Unfortunately MediaMonkey doesn't have a larger programmers community that could create these types of plugins.

I guess the Gold version is a suitable candidate for CDDB support then, as the fee at it's current level or at a new level could include the license fee. FreeDB dying, how-so?

I don't know what Netgear uses either, and reverse engineering isn't a piece of cake here I guess. I still don't understand why people like Netgear are persistant in producing a crappy visual basic implementation of a server when they could - at least in parallel - release the specs and have someone able have a go at it ... I mean they can't very well be worried that they would breed competition or erode revenues, now could they?

The digital media market is saturated with propriety implementations. This is something we (consumers) or MediaMonkey can do little about.

Netgear MP 101 uses UPnP

Post by 301.20 »

and I have to agree the server that comes with the product is shameful. Netgear really does need to rethink their server...however, I would definitely be willing to pay for a plugin designed by MM for MM to act as a UPnP server.

Hope someday this becomes a reality with MM, until then we MP 101 users will have to hope, wish and pray....

UPDATE and even more of a plea for UPnP MM media development

Post by 301.20 »

Okay, Nero has something that almost gets the job done, but is slower than...I don't know what, and then Media Player has a media server that can't play albums, only one track at a time.

to weep

TwonkyVision Music Server

Post by Rupert »

I am waiting for my Netgear MP101 to arrive, but am ready to upgrade the firmware, and then load TwonkyVision Music Server instead of the Net gear firmware.
From reading round, sounds like the best advice.

Would like to be able to use the MM auto playlists on it, but suspect I will have to export them each time...

Playlist export could probably be automated with a script. This could be set to run on start or shutdown of MediaMonkey.

You can always request a script in the Scripts and Components forum. Maybe somebody is willing to write it.
