m3u files not working

Post by jonas »

Hi, I just found your program and I've been playing around with it for about an hour, but I can't figure out how to use the m3u files for playlists.

All of my CDs are in the following format:

\Artist - Album\Artist - Title.mp3
\Artist - Album\Artist - Album.m3u

No matter what I do I can't figure out how to make the program use the m3u files.

If id3-tags has tracknumbers, the album is played in that order or alphabetically.

If they do not have track numbers, the list is played alphabetically.

What I want is to play the songs in the order that they are listed in the m3u files. Is this possible?

The Playlists folder is empty after importing CDs.

(using 1.0)

thanks,
Jonas

The track numbers from .m3u files are imported automatically when you scan your drives (or a directory). You can check them in "Order" column in the song list. The default order of tracks in the song list depends on the selected node in the tree - for example in "Artists\REM" songs are sorted by song name, in "Artist\REM\Up" they are sorted by their track number (if exists = successfuly imported or manually entered). You can change that default sort order by clicking an appropriate column in the song list.

If track numbers are not correctly imported from .m3u files, then let me know, please.

I've been playing around a bit and I found out that I had bad luck with my first testing. For the first 2 CDs I added to the list all had some problems with the playing order, and after adding a directory on my harddisk with about 400 albums I found 2 bugs regardring this:

1. When a track number is found in the ID3 tag this is used instead of the order in the m3u list. On the 2 CDs I tried (MP3s downloaded from Usenet) most of the albums had the track number set to the same number. This made the program play these files alphabetically.

Another problem is when a double CD is in a single playlist with tracknumbers in ID3 tags related the first and second CD.

It would be very nice to change the primary priority for tracklistings from ID3 tags to M3U. A general option to select what you want would be nice too.

2. Yesterday when I tried with the 2 CDs I also had some albums that were listed without tracknumbers and played alphabetically, but when I tried the same 2 CDs today the problem vanished. When adding the 400 albums from harddisk today just 1 album had the same problem:

d:\mp3\brasil\_new\Adriana Calcanhoto - Publico

When copying this to another folder (d:\test\Adriana Calcanhoto - Publico) the problem went away.

When changing the album name for all files of the album, still same problem, but when deleting the album from the database and readding it everything worked just fine.

Seems like a bug a pretty hard to find...

Thanks,
Jonas

BTW,
Thanks a lot for a great program, just what I needed.
Me and some friends have been talking about making a program like this for 3-4 years, but due to our laziness none of us have really done it.

1. Yes, this is a good idea, a global option in the setup dialog could be useful.

2. I'll try to review the code, if there is a bug. If you find an album, where
the order wasn't read correctly, please send me .m3u file, full path of the
directory and a list of files there.

I think that many people have though about writing something for music management (me for several years), but I decided that someone must start, so I did. Actually there is a number of music managers, but most of them look like a toy for me. :)
