MM5 x MM4

Post by HeavyEditor »

Waited to convert to MM5 (Vice MM4) due to missing "script" functionality.
Reached good threshold and on MM5 now.
Profile: big DB (1.4M records), lots of tag editing, frequent auto organize, 3-4 hour editing sessions.

Likes:
- MUCH more stable than MM4
- Concurrency-related issues (especially when executing scripts with tag editing) seem to have been addressed by single-threading specific tasks.
- DB seems more robust than MM4.

Suggestions:
- Really need Artist Top Track script capability
- Really need support for Track Number format, "1" vice "01". Should be a preference on Auto Tag from Filename or global setting. Lost MM4 ability to fix multiple selections across multiple albums with MM4 Case Fixer script but missing in MM5. Forced to Auto Increment one album at a time.
- When update Album Title in Album sorted List and press save, those tracks jump immediately to sort order while cursor does not follow. Have to scroll to new location to perform further updates if exited too early.
- MM5 gets busy without showing a spinning activity status. The product seems usable at these times but is not (example: you can try to select single/multiple tracks but is doesn't work; seems like your shift key is broken) It "wakes back up" when it finishes whatever it is working on (likely completing tag updates just made) and all is right with the world. In general, if MM4 is working on something in the background, it would be helpful if the spinning wheel were active including some indication of what the SW is working on for all use cases.
- MM5 is performing ghost updates like MM4 did occasionally without informing what is being done. Example: fresh install of MM5 and initial scan to fill database (not importing old MM4 DB); MM5 decides it wants to update 3,000+ files without any user direction/edits. "Infer" settings OFF. At least inform user what is being updated in those files. Investigation of updated files appears to suggest MM5 want to auto fill missing Album Artist values when intentionally left blank. Have only seen once in MM5 but used to see periodically in MM4 when crashed and had to reload DB from scratch periodically.
- If entering Genre with multiple delimited values, if an entered value goes beyond right edge of box, you have to press End key to get to the end of the string to add more. Cursor does not auto-position to end of string.
- The Genre entry field is difficult to use for long Genres (example: "Geo: Africa - Southern - Madagascar"). It would be superb if the length of the string being entered exceeded box length to pop of a list of all Genres starting with string typed for user to select (example: user types "Geo: Africa - Southern" and list shows all existing genres starting with that string, one per country in southern Africa for selection). Workaround today is to open Genres on left panel and drag and drop tracks onto correct selection - clumsy at best. Also, when MM4 gets busy during the node drag and drop, it misses pressing of Ctrl on drag and can thus reset the entire tag vice append as needed. Not sure if MM5 has the same issue as MM4 here. To make this work in MM4 have to press and hold Ctrl for a couple of seconds then drag and drop (of course checking if worked afterwards).

Issues:
- MM5 throws out of memory error (memory leak in code?) and comes up to dead white screen when choose restart. Have to kill with task manager and then restart
- MM5 throws up white background screens that are not sized to window when auto-organize or change artwork. Cannot reproduce consistently. May be tied to memory issue without throwing an exception. Shutdown/restart clears issue. These white screens do not display detailed information (examples: which files to move with auto organize, which artwork to remove that is no longer referenced). They display window controls (example: huge clickable "X" in middle of window which would normally be at upper right to close, user action picks which do not highlight when moused over/clicked but seem to work). Have also seen completely white pop up with no navigation and get stuck/restart required.

Thank you for the good work the team does on this great product. Trying to be constructive and helpful here.

Which Build (Help > About) are you using?

For crashes and hangs please capture them in separate debug logs (step 4b) and attach the logs to separate Support Tickets: https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86643

This will help a developer analyze why this occurs in your setup.

- MediaMonkey relies on Album Artist to define Albums so this is why its filled in when blank and Artist and Album are known.

FYI: The Case Checker is now available when you right-click tracks(s) > Edit tags > Case Checker

Artist Top Tracks script by Trixmoto.

trixmoto wrote: Sun Mar 28, 2010 6:39 pm As requested, this script processes all of the selected tracks and looks up the popularity ranking, playcount or number of listeners, based on the artist top tracks data from Last Fm. You can select any field to store this data in and specify a prefix if using a string field.

Genre Finder - would be awesome too.

I know there are many others but... the customization options, white and black lists etc...

You can have Artist top tracks if you view artist and then Switch to Browser View.
