Changing column field and order

Post by MonkeyStrut »

hi.

I understand we cannot decide once and for all what columns/fields to display and their respective order in the various collections view. Too bad.

From what I understood, we need to create automated playlists for that. Fine. However, even after having done that, and closing properly MMW and re-opening it, sometimes the columns field and order is right, but sometimes, it is not and I have to re-do the whole thing.

Am I missing something? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a known bug that will be once solved?

thanks.

Which Build (Help > About) of MediaMonkey?

Are you trying to have different settings per Playlist, because that's not possible.

MMW 2024.1.0.3113

No, I'm just trying to fix oe, and happy if all the others need to be the same.

If I tweak the columns as I want from the edit section of the automated playlists, it works, but if I go back to those settings, sometimes what I asked for is entirely gone.

Please try with the latest MediaMonkey 2024.2 beta. Does that work better? If not, something specific seem to trigger the lost column settings?

Forum discussions have shown that lots of users find the column width configuration process confusing, with MM's ability to blow away user configurations without warning a particular gripe. Development has been complicated by different users expressing different preferences about how views should be managed - options seem divided between:
  • a different configuration for each view (ie one for Playlists and a different one for Album View and a different one for Artists) and
  • one configuration that can be applied to all views.
The current functionality leans towards a different configuration for each view, but what actually constitutes a different view I haven't seen defined. If you haven't already explored user-defined views, it is possible that this might offer you the stability you are quite reasonably expecting. My experience over several years is that attention from the Devs has enabled MM to be more respectful of user-defined views.

I suggest that you set your own custom view configuration via the Manage Views dialog (View Elements menu via the down arrow next to the double burger menu icon top right of the main file view pane) to see whether that helps to preserve the column configuration that you're looking for.

Cheers

Well, I accidentally clicked on a column heading (album artist) while aiming for something else, and, presto, my configured multi column sort view was instantly blown away in favour of album artist ascending. It didn't take me long to re-enter my custom view, but I should not have had to.

Is there a setting somewhere which can prevent MM from automatically overwriting a configured view? I can see how it is useful to have the default view easily configurable, but if I have gone to the trouble of defining a view then it should stay that way unless I go back into the manage views pane to change it.

Cheers

Hi,
You can create your own layouts using Manage views option that will not be overwritten in views you select it.

I also added new improvement for list view https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=21863

Incorrect!

Once again - today - I have had a single column sort click overwrite a defined and named column sort configuration. I had the main list sorted in a named view. I clicked on a column heading to sort by that column, and once finished with that went back to the Views pulldown to reselect my named view called "Sorted Artist List". Clicking on Sorted Artist List did not change in the sorting of the list back to where I wanted it, because the configuration of Sorted Artist List had been changed to the single column click that I had done just a minute before.

So far I haven't figured out what combination of actions can reliably reproduce the uncommanded overwrite, but it is happening often enough (about 1 in 20 sessions) for it to be a major annoyance. For an uninitiated or non-patient user, this would limit their perceptions of the reliability of the code.

From my perspective, the ONLY means of changing a defined column sort should be through the Manage Views dialog. Once a view is defined and selected in the main list, there should be NO case where one or more clicks on column headings to temporarily change the view of the main list should change the defined view, but that is what is happening.
