Tagging and Organizing Music Videos

Post by badgerbic »

So far I love this program, I think it will work well as a jukebox for a small party coming up :)

My question relates to organizing and tagging Music Videos, and I am looking for recommendations on how to best organize my music videos into the library.
So far in file properties, I have been setting TYPE to MUSIC VIDEO, and also setting ARTIST and TITLE.
Should I also fill in album, album artist?? Or would a generic 'Music Videos' album be better??

What about storing the music video files ... better to put them all in one music video folder ... or put them in artist folders?

Thank you for any recommendations. I would like to get things organized correctly the first time around :)

It doesn't matter, you should do what is most convenient for you. Adding Album and Album Artist would allow you to find more from Album and see all music and music video files related to the Album. For storage the same goes, do what is convenient for you. I'd go with folders as this would make recovery of tag data easier if so needed in the future. It also tends to work better with Artwork.

badgerbic ... since you are asking <G>

First, as with my music and videos I try to get all the info I can and put it in the tags. I would suggest that 'Album Artist' be filled in even if it is the same as Artist. MM sometimes uses that when you would think Artist would be used. Of course how much info really depends on what is important to you.

As for storage, all of my 'music' (including mvideos) are on a nas drive with folders like 'Music 1-F', 'Music G-J' etc. Then in each of those I have directories for ARISTS - ALBUM - YEAR (the year just reminds me when it was recorded/first release) with all tracks inside of that. I will also have a ARTIST - VIDEOS for any music videos.

Simple ... clean ... understandable.

Thank you both for your replies, this will help me as I jump into organizing my Library.

In the short term, since I am planning to use MM as a jukebox-like device for a party ... I was thinking of picking a few hundred appropriate party songs and temporarily putting them in a Party folder, probably leaving them as music singles, and then using that as my library for the party. That way nobody can select off tempo songs.

Sound like a good idea or not??

Sure that works. But if your library is 'organized' then you could simply create a 'playlist' and use that for your part.

But for a quick fix just loading the songs you like/want is fine. As Lowlander intimated .. it really depends on your needs.

I'd create a Playlist too instead of a folder with duplicates.

You can use Party Mode to lock-down MediaMonkey and you can use Collections to limit what users can access if you do want them to be able to do some selections.
