Sync'ing only playlists and assoc. files

I'm not as technical as I used to be; a product of age and evolving tech I'm afraid..

I have a bit over 8,000 songs in my library. I do not want to have them all sync'd with my phone (HTC) or my Galaxy tab.

What I'm looking to do is only move to the android devices, selected playlists and the associated files. These will be created and managed on my 'music server' using MM.
I've probably got 130 or so playlists, from rock to eclectic, and I just want to move these over, and be able to access the playlists to play them, leaving the other music files only on my server.

I've looked thru the forum etc, but can't quite see what I'm looking for.

Can MM for Android handle this, if so how, and how to I set it up?

That's not possible. Syncing Playlists will sync the media files in those Playlists as well.

However what you can do is use the Media Server capability in MMW (Tools > Options > Media Servers). It allows you to share your Library to any DLNA capable clients on your network (use UPnP in MMA to see Media Servers). Thus you can share your Playlists that way and play the files on them without syncing the files to your device. Do note that this only is designed for the local network.
