Level Track Volume, can it be done more than once?

Post by load97 »

Hi,

Question for the knowledgable. A few months ago I Analyzed Volume, and then decided to Level Track Volume. I did it using the most current version of MM(3.2.1.1297) with the default of 89db. Also checked avoid clipping. Leveled tracks per a track as well. For the most part I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Though, I've noticed on my Android phone its just a tad quieter than I like, along with my HT, garage radio. Not enough to be worried or bummed out about, I can live with it just fine.

Is it possible to re do the volume to a slightly higher level after its been done once? If so is 90db plenty to start with(to help avoid running in to MM using the avoid clipping protection)? I imagine it doesn't take a lot to get real loud or real quiet.

My fiance thinks the songs somehow lost a litle bit of the low bass, and highs after doing it. I am not really sure myself. Its not enough to really bother me I guess. As I told her from what I read on here is that the file/data its self doesn't get changed, just the listening volume. Though, I would think if MM detected clipping, it might suppress some of the highs/lows to avoid clipping?

Either way were still pretty happy with doing it. Its nice to not have to touch the volume control all the time.

TIA,
-Scott

you can turn the numbers higher on the percent box but not sure if monkey is able to amp up the sound or not?

i play my files at 110 percent and it works. that way all my old files that were too low when i leveled them play at the 100 percent level.

but thats just playback so is it able to also raise the volume in the song file? not sure you can try it on one song.

first check the songs level in the audacity editor program make sure
that you have the settings for it to make a copy of the song when it opens it.
then by opening the mp3 in it and looking at the spikes in the sine wave.

then close the program with out saving.

then do the level with the increased volume level in monkey.

and then open the song in audacity again and check the spikes again see if they are louder.
if not then monkey can not do it.
which just means you will have to do it in the audacity program. which has tons of features you can use in it. :D

MM goes by db. Do you mean 110db? I would think that would be way to high and induce clipping quite often.

You would want to avoid leveling in the first place and setup leveling in the Device Profile itself so your tracks on your PC remain untouched. This is because leveling could introduce audio artifacts to reduce audio quality. Other than that I assume you can level as many times as you want.

From the reading I have done on hear in the previous months it is not suppose to induce artifacts as it doesn't change the track file. Just raises or lowers the volume of it.

That's "Analyze track volume", not "Level track volume".

Where does it state that? From what I found reading it does not.

I've been reading that thread pretty much since its inception, including all the off shoots of it as well. Plus plenty of google. Considering I have prevent clipping checked, I don't see how it would be degraded. Does it compress the highs and lows somewhat to meet the target of 89db?

Burned an audio cd with a few tracks doing them from the original file(not track leveled), to the one at 89db, then one at 90db. Did this with 4 different music songs, and then played them on my home theater. I could only tell the difference between the raw/untouched files and the 89db ones. Couldn't tell a difference between 89db and the 90db.

Started to run out of time, but I redid an untouched song to 93db, and I think I could tell a loudness difference between that and 89db. But that was only listening on the crappy laptop speakers before I left for work.

I also checked out MP3Gain and fiddled with that for about 45mins. Seemed like a pretty decent program, and has an avoid clipping option.

Like I originally said I will be happy enough with the way it is, just the fiance wanted it a louder and I do agree it is a bit quieter than I'd like. What originally started my investigation is she thought Porn Star Dancing didn't sound all that great in the car.

Hmmm: http://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/webhelp/f ... veling.htm indicates MP3's are done losslessly, but the warning when doing so (Leveling Track volume irreversibly modifies the track) doesn't inspire much confidence in me.

Older post that I dug up. Apparently the one guy states that it doesn't affect fidelity etc from his researching of MM, MP3Gain etc..

If it doesn't change the fidelity, quality and so forth, I've always wondered why it can't be reversed? Or could it if MM, MP3Gain kept a change log for each file?

BTW, is there any links hinting at what might be in MM4? Searching brought up way to many hits about Apple ios4 LOL.

yep i mean db's

no it does not really make it have more clipping.

its just adding back what was taken away when it was accidently lowered to 89 db's by the leveler.

well its adding back 9db's of it. because the leveler put it at 89 db's making that the new 100 mark of the file.
so adding the 10 more on it would be making it back to 99 db's. so its still not at a level to make it have clipping.

:)

I think I follow you, but why is the standard at 89db? As from reading/understanding stuff on here is that anything much higher would create clipping? Though, what happens when you check prevent clipping at that high of a level?
