Is "Arist & Album Artist Node" Working correct

Post by selimsivad »

Hi,

I am new to MediaMonkey and am really digging it. This might be a silly question, but I am confused by the "Artist & Album Artist" Node. It isn't doing what I thought it would do. Here's an example:

I have an album with the following tags:

Album="Mating Call"
Artist="John Coltrane"
Album Artist="Tadd Dameron With John Coltrane"

I would expect to see this album in the "John Coltrane" node under the "Artist & Album Artist" Node in the tree, but I do not. I only see it under the "Tadd Dameron With John Coltrane" Node.

When I choose "John Coltrane" in the Track Browser, "Mating Call" appears as expected. It just doesn't appear in the Tree.

I thought that the "Artist & Album Artist" Node was intended to show you a combination of all the albums where the performer is either the Artist or the Album Artist (show me both Artists & Album Artists). Thus, negating the need to peruse both the Artist and "Album Artist" nodes.

It seems like the "Artist & Album Artist Node" is acting like the "Album Artist" Node.

This is just an example, the phenomenon is consistent. Am I just mistaken, or is this a bug?

I am using 3.0.1.1127 on Windows XP.

Thanks!

Album Artist & Artists node

Post by rusty »

This is by design, though perhaps it's a design bug.

The reason for the behaviour is that we wanted to display both sets of information (i.e. you should be able to see the Tracks on this album via 1) John Coltrane (for tracks specifically by that artist) 2) Tadd Dameron With John Coltrane 3) Tadd Dameron with John Coltrane/Mating Call ) , but at the same time allow users to drag and drop Tracks / Albums.

Drag and dropping of Albums wouldn't be possible (due to ambiguity as to the intended result) if this node functioned as an aggregate of the other two nodes.

Semi-clear?

This is actually a rather delicate problem.
But I think most users would expect the "Artist & Album Artist Node" to act like a combination of the "Artist node" and the "Album Artist node". I know I would. To make it work that way isn't it just to disable the Drag & Drop where it isn't obvious what will happen due to ambiguity.

In fact I wouldn't mind to see an "All PersonsTypes node" containing Artist, Album Artist, Composer, Conductor & Lyricist. (Perhaps make it configurable.)
The first level should be the "Person" name.
The second level should be PersonType.
The third level should then be album where the PersonType exists on.

Drag & drop should only be allowed from level two and down. It wouldn't only be a great node to browse through and really see what kind of "persons" you have in your collection, it would also be more obvious what would happen when you Drag & Drop.

What do you and others think about it?
