need your opinion on what mp3 player to buy

Hi
I am new to this forum and I am getting rid of itunes and all ipods .
I have owned six ipods and they all have fallen short when considering what I paid for them and their relatively short lifespan .
so what are you guys using?
I want to do some research this time around so any suggestions are welcomed . I am considering all models with or without video and am open minded except no apple products and MM compatibility is a plus

I have went back to my faithful minidisc until I decide on what to purchase

its mostly a cr_p shoot.

but pick the one that plays the format you want.
has the best price for the biggest hd space and most user wants.
and has the best support from the manufacture of the device.

you get what you ask for if you buy Ray jay's fast cheap portable devices check at the corner of 9th and ajax street.

if you know what i mean.

Personally I'm a big Sony fan. I had a NWA-1000 - big mistake!! Looked great, SonicStage made it unusable. However, I've recently got a NWZ-A818 which syncs with MM, plays WMA/MP3 and video, 8Gb, great sound.

I guess it depends on what country you're in partially as that varies what's available in stores. And also how much music you want to put on it!

I never used Apple products and studiously avoided eveything to do with Apple (even used substitute quicktime software to avoid using Apple's).

Used Creative Players- Touch and Zen and Zen micro series. Only one is still functional and I don't use it. (I had a HUGE library of m4a files and the conversion issues for playing back was a pain)

Actually bought an earlier Sony player...it was sorta ok but ultimately cr_p, returned it...The new "Walkmans" might be better.

Bought and tested the original Zune....jesus what cr_p...returned.

Tested a lot of others...they always fell short....the Creative stuff was the best...it seems to be the major player against Apple.

I know you don't want to hear this but I now use iPods for music players. I have a Nano 4g 1st generation, an iPod video and an iPhone. I hate to admit it but even with the stupid cr_p Apple does (unable to delete on iPod itself etc...) they are the best players for all around everyday use imo.
Everyone is following the iPod innovations...no doubt about it.

There is NO way I would use iTunes. MM3 now takes care of ACC files and is currently working/compatible with everything iPod EXCEPT the iPhone (in the works and hopefully fully compatible soon)....

How do you want to use....a huge 80gb to hold all your stuff or just small ones for current playlists?

Are all your iPods toast?...you could shift over to MM and still use the iPods till you transition into something else.

The d_mn iPhone is really a convergence deal for me...the phone, palm pilot, music player totally works here and the internet access is serious icing on the cake...hard not to appreciate the full edge network connectivity. It p_sses me off but it really works...there are some annoyances but the big things work bulletproof.

I had always avoided Apple thinks too.
I was a fan of mPIO players and 3 of the 4 I bought still work today.
My last one is a Creative ZEN 4 GB with 2.5" screen. What a beauty, great sound too.

Overall I prefer players with AA or AAA batteries. Lithium ones have a lifetime of about 1-3 years.

Kinda depends on any requirements you have ... for example, would you want to load so many songs on it that flash players are out of the question, etc.

Anyway, I love my 2GB Sansa Clip. ( There's a 4GB model coming out soon or it may be out already. ) It's one of the best sounding MP3 players I've ever owned, and it does MTP or MSC mode. Very small but with a good display.

I also love my Sansa Connect 4GB; it has WiFi built in and can play free Yahoo Launchcast music streams, or you can sign up for Yahoo Music To Go ($15/month) and download song mixes (subscription) over the WiFi.

And I hate to harsh anybody's mellow, but I still use my iPod Nano 1st gen all the time. This thing syncs FAST, and I like the interface.

I really do not need anything larger than 8gb of storage ,
I was fairly happy with the interface on my ipods but having 5 fail in 4 years is not acceptable .
I take such good care of all my electronic devices that they should last longer than a few months,I have minidisc players that are still going strong after over 6 years of use and they have moving parts unlike my ipod nano
I am looking for something durable and simple to operate

How about something smaller than 8GB, like 2GB? If so, sounds like the Sansa Clip might work for you. Or there's a 4GB model coming out in a couple of weeks.

Keep in mind that the Sony, Creative, and Sandisk machines don't support ACC. Locking yourself into a mp3 "only" player might be a problem.

MM will convert ACC files to mp3 on the fly while you load your portable player...but take it from me...it gets old after awhile.

I used a Toshiba Gigabeat for quite some time. It worked great for me. The only reason I got rid of it was because I needed more space.
WARNING though. If you do get a gigabeat, their software is pretty crappy (the gigabeat forum is actually what led me to MediaMonkey). I only used their program to apply the album art.

Actually my new 8Gb Sony player supports MP3/WMA/AAC (and MP4/W4V for video) as long as there's no DRM. It's definitely easy to use, with amazing battery life and excellent sound quality - the supplied buds are great too!

You must mean AAC. Only a problem if you have AAC.

Amazon.com has an 8GB (yes, 8GB) Cowon iAudio U5 on sale for $110. That's a really good deal.
