Howto: MediaMonkey on Linux / Wine

Thank for all the tips. I tried and finally was able to start up and use MediaMonkey on Ubuntu 8.10.
At first it made me glad, since MM has been the only software i have really been missing (well... apart from PhotoshopCS4 and Lightroom, both of which I still use through VirtualBox) since i permanently converted to Linux a year ago.

But unfortunately my experience with Wine'd MediaMonkey was not working good enough. First of all it looked quite hars - like all wine softwares do with bad fonts etc...
And it was quite buggy although basically functioning. Resizing etc made funny things even froze everything. And couple of times the player just froze.
I wish that MediaMonkey would someday be fully ported to Linux, but until then i think i'll settle with actually almost as good program called GMUSICBROWSER! It has beautiful and totally customizable outlook, mass tagging, mass renaming etc, watch folders, fetch covers.... only important thing that is missing is Tagging from internet. But it'll do for now.

Also Mozilla's SONGBIRD is looking really promising, but until there is ripping and mass renaming functions it's just not good enough.

But i really really miss MediaMonkey. But nothing in the world would make me switch back to Windows again...

oh, and to the notion to use MediaMonkey through VirtualBox. Yes that works perfectly, but IMO VirtualBox simply sucks too much of computer resources. It basically means that if i would only use VirtualBox for using MediaMonkey, listening to music would reserve up to 50% of my ram. (I have reserved lot of ram to VirtualBox since i use it for image manipulation).

FYI, I just tested wine 1.1.12 which fixed a major MM bug. It's running pretty blame good. I gave it a silver.

The bug which I reported was that MM would not run with WMP out of the box. I believe one of the workarounds was to install winamp and some other BS. Now using winetricks, you can install wmp plus a few other of it's goodies and it's good to go. Piece of cake. Report here:

Cons:
USB sync is currently not working as there is no driver under wine. However, this appears to be under development finally and is one of six priority milestones for the next version. And it's sluggish.

I would encourage those of you interested in this app to try it under wine and submit a test report. More importantly, if you find a problem, file a bug.

Hi folks,
I've read through this entire thread, message by message.
I get the impression most people are resolving to accept virtualisation as the solution. As one or two people have pointed out, this requires substaintial computer resources to make it viable. One of the many reasons people switch to Linux is to have a decent OS running on older and lower spec computers. I use, for instance, a Compaq nx7010 with 1.5gb Ram. It has a centrino processor. Virtualbox is nice, but on this computer it's a dog. Makes the rest of my OS more or less useless. So for me running a VM is not the solution.

I am keen to get this working in Wine.

Am I correct in understanding that some people have got this to work, after employing various workarounds, and with some features broken?

I'll give it a shot following the instructions I found here.

Here's another hand up from a long time MM user saying I'd love to see a port to Linux. I've looked at well over 10 media programs on linux and nothing I have found gets me all that exited when considering replacing MM.

That wiki entry is outdated and needs to be updated. I was not able to log into the wiki nor register for it, so I assume it is not publicly maintained.

It is not necessary to delete the MSD device DLLs. I left mine there and I can access and syncronise to my Sansa player without any problems thus far.
I am using Wine 1.1.15 and MM 3.0.7.1191

So this is good news.
There is other info I would add to the Wiki, if I had access to it.

I wrote out extensive info, tips, and work-arounds, at the winehq site, but after testing and typing out for two hours my session expired. All info was lost. I resubmitted a much more condensed report, without all the tips and stuff. That main thing that may be very helpful is for people wanting to sync to a device. Connect your device in MSD (Mass Storage Device) mode to linux, then allocate a drive letter to that device in Wine Configuration, then point MM device configuration to that drive letter. Works like a charm. Perfectly.

Also got it to work yesterday. Failed the day before (a few times) and then took me to the forums when I tried the register link on the wiki. That's when I thought perhaps wiki editing is not allowed.

Anyway... glad I tried again.
