Dedicated Playlist view for Drag and Drop ability

Post by Rednroll »

I haven't seen this suggestion in the stickied list.....and I'm not sure if this is currently possible, but if it is then I'ld appreciate any feedback on how to setup MM to do it.

What I would like to see in the Main view window is a way to Split it up, so you can see a currently selected Playlist along with a currently selected Library Node song list. So that when you are creating Playlists, you can select songs from the Library Node view and drag and drop them into the Playlist view.

So my current hang up is that when I'm creating a playlist, when I select a Library Node, it shows all the songs in that Node on the main window, but when I want to see the current order of my songs in the playlist, I have to select that playlist in the tree view and I can only see one view on the main display at a time. Thus, I'm trying to create a certain flow of songs in my playlist so that they fit well together but I have to keep clicking on nodes in the tree view to switch back and forth between the 2 different views. So I wish there was a dedicated Playlist view that only changes when I click on a selected Playlist Node. Then the Track View was dedicated to the Library Node that I have selected in the Tree View. This way the current playlist I'm working on is always in the main view and doesn't disappear when I click on a library Node to find a song to add to that Playlist. Currently what I've been doing is to just keep clicking on Library nodes and selecting to "Send to Playlist". Then after I've added a bunch of songs to the Playlist, I select the Playlist Node and then go back and edit the Playlist to make the songs flow better when going from one song to the other. If I had a dual/split view of both selected Nodes, I wouldn't have to do all the extra steps of clicking back and forth between Library Nodes/Playlist Node to assemble a Playlist. I could just select Library Nodes with my Playlist in view and drag and drop selected songs from the selected Library Node view into the current playlist view.

Rather than keep explaining....Here's a screen pic from Floola, which I find much easier to work with when creating playlists. The 1st Three top boxes are the Library views. The far right top box is the playlist view. The bottom view is the "Whatever you have selected" View. Thus, My Playlist that I'm working on is always in view, in that Top/Right view and I can see the order of the songs at all times. This makes assembling the Playlist so much easier when the Playlist is always in view. So I wish MM would have a similar screen layout, so it is easier to do drag and drop of my selected media files into the Playlist I'm working on when assembling a Playlist.
Image

So when you select the "Track View" in MM....I would like to see something similar to how the track view window appears in the main window....but have a "Playlist view" option and the Playlist view only changes when you select a different Playlist in the Tree view. Hopefully that all makes sense.....and hopefully, that is already possible and I just don't know how to do it. :D

lonnnnngggg request for something that i belive is already there in several ways.
which are.

1.track browser. check the view menu to open the track browser.
it has three columns you can set each one to show what you want to see.
you can set the one to the playlists you want to view or something else.

2. but you can also use the now playing playlist. make a playlist then play it.
view the now playing playlist when you want to see what the play order is.
select the songs from the main list view and right click on a selected song or group of songs.
then click on send to playlist. then click on the name of the playlist you want to add them too.
and add them.
go to the list when finished adding songs. and then you just need to set up the playlist order once.
and right click on the name of the playlist and on that menu click on the top link called update play order
that will save the order you have the playlist in at the time you click that update link.

does any of that sound like what you were looking for. 8)

So far Option 1......NO.
Here's what you get.
Image

Notice how I have a Library Node selected in the Tree view on the left and in both the top and bottom view are essentially different views of the same selected "Library" Node, but there is no playlist in sight. I'm asking for a "Dedicated Playlist View".....maybe my post wasn't looooooooong enough, because you seem to have misunderstood it. ;)

if you use the defaultly added all accessible songs playlist. in the playlist node instead of the library node
you can get all the songs you want in the list view area. and sort them by what ever column you want to click on to sort. then you can pick the songs you want and do the 2nd step i said above.

by right clicking on the song/s and sending to the playlist you made. i really never go in to the library for anything other then the files to edit node.

i do every thing with playlists. 8)

Option 2 doesn't do it either with the now playing view exposed. Would you like me to write some more or post more pictures? There's a reason why my original post was loooooooooong with a posted pic.....so people could better understand what I'm asking for......if you still don't get it, then maybe give Floola a spin and see it 1st hand. ;)

Not what I'm looking for.......if you had read that loooooooong post, you would have saw that I already mentioned what you described is similar to what I do now, and it is less than an optimal solution....thus the feature suggestion. ;)

i've read that whole thing 3 or 4 times it is not that big shucks some of mine are twice that long. :D
but i don't get a screen shot in that message. only in your reply to me can i see any screen shot.
okay they seemed to have fixed the error i had done a work around for in the track browser.

so try this. go to the libray node then to the hard drive node you have your songs on. if they are only on one hard drive.
if on more then just go to the library node. right click on it and select the option none show all.
now in the track browser you have all the songs shown in the right hand column.
make sure the now playing playlist is open and use the edit option on that window to clear the list if anything is in there now.
then go down that third column track browser list and pick the songs you want to work with in the playlist, double click the ones you selected, they will go to the now playing playlist. you can adjust the order you want them in by dragging them in that list.
then you just have to select all them in that list and send to a new playist. they should keep the same play order you set up. that way you can see both the songs your chosing and the playlist in the now playing window.
i just did that and it works except i did not make a new playlist i was just checking the steps for you. 8)

double click the ones you selected, they will go to the now playing playlist. this worked once for me ? not sure why it is not now?

but i noticed they show up in the list view area when you select them so you don't even have to have the now playing window open.
just adjust the list view area when you have the songs you want in there, and make that your playist. 8)

just don't click in the track browser and unselect them, or they go out of the list view area they will stay selected if you click in the list view area,.

oh i seen you added the image in the first message. yes that playlist colume is missing in the monkeys track browser.

I too would like to see some advanced features for creating and editing playlists, and using the now playing list is not an option, I use the now playing list for playing.

Maybe it is not an option for you, but using the Now Playing list for creating/editing playlists is an option for some of us.

You have very simple solution - just start two instances of program. In one instance use Now Playing for playback, in another instance use it for manipulation of some playlist.

Actually it is not, MM does not like to play well with itself on my system. So I cannot have two instances open on my system. But as the OP requested, a dedicated playlist creation panel would be the best solution for everyone. That way I can have my now playing panel with playing tracks and a playlist creation panel for playlists to be created, and you and your co-users would have either the np or playlist panel for playlist creation.

And why will this solution not work for you, and let the rest of us keep our now playing list??

Why? I think you should report this in the Bug forum.
nynaevelan wrote:a dedicated playlist creation panel would be the best solution for everyone.
The Now Playing panel IS a dedicated playlist creation panel. It has options for loading/saving playlists, for arranging tracks... It has built-in support with API for scripts, the new panel would not have that. Do you know that not so newly introduced Track Browser panel still has not a support for scripts?

It could work, but I am just saying that you already have such possibility.

I agree that the Now Playing isn't meant for playlist creation although it can be used as such (for those who don't play songs).

I believe that tabs is high on the todo list for MediaMonkey and if they do implement tabs it would probably go a long way in solving this need some users have.

I will if/when I ever take the time to investigate to determine if it is an issue with MM or my system. Personally, I think it is an issue with my system so for that reason it isn't high on my priority list to resolve. Whenever I have some time to spare, I plan on uninstalling all my beta test installations and installing a new instance to see if that will resolve the problems I am having. But as I said, it is not high on my priority list.
