MM4 Feature Suggestion: Video Categories [#7602]

Post by ACraigL »

After using iTunes for so long, and now that MM supports video (YAY!), one of the big things I'm missing is to be able to categorize the video by TV, Movie, Music Video or Podcast (this last may already be ok). I'm using a few different iTunes sync middleware tools, but going back to MM would be ideal now that video is in the game. This is a primary behavior for me at this point, and although I have moved on to Android from iOS, I still desire this functionality. Here's a few of my typical/daily use cases:
  • Sync 'all unwatched TV shows'
  • Sync '5 most recently added movies'
  • only sync checked/selected movies
I tried building a few auto playlists to simulate it, but so far I keep coming to the conclusion that these sub-categories of video, and the ability to set syncing at the file level is really important. Given the size of these files, more granularity and control is needed to deal with the storage management issues they create.

Thanks!

Spending more time in the library -- it appears that the video subcategories are managed through the 'genre' metadata tag. Is this correct? If so I can certainly account for that although iTunes uses a discrete metadata atom for this identification. It would be a whole lot easier if MM could use this directly...

Video subcategories are managed by 'Type' (open track properties and you'll see Type field). You can set Video, TV, Music Video, Podcast Video. Then you can easily create auto-playlist including this 'Type' field.

Ah. I see that now.
Can 'Movie' type be added? It's not there (that I can see). Is this proprietary to MM? I have automatd my video creation, so it would be nice if I can set this on the file prior to going into MM.

I'd like to see Movie as a category as well. Some will probably argue that Anime is it's own video category as well.

Why? Anime is just a subset of TV (basically a TV genre). And I thought Video type = Movie, essentially.

No Video would be clips and home movies. Otherwise TV can be removed as it's video too.

Well if anything then maybe "Video" should be changed in name to "Movies". Why should "Movies" and "clips and home movies" have different collection types when you can just create your own custom collections?

For me, this is about getting content to a device in a logical way. If I want 5 TV shows, 3 movies, and all my home videos, I should be able to do that. Not possible if everything is categorized 'video'. Besides, this is already supported; we're just asking for another subcategory in the existing list.

Curious as to why there is objection to this?

That is possible already. You can create custom collections that contain whatever you want (collections do not have to be based on 'Type' only).

If TV is a category Movies should be too. Actual movies and clips and home movies are different things as different as TV and Videos. As long as custom Types isn't supported I think it should be added. The fact that you can create Collections is missing the point as in that case the whole Type feature can be removed. If there is a need to separate TV there is a need to separate Movies.

Not really. The only thing that differentiates Types from collections is the playback rules and summaries. I could see why you'd want different playback rules for TV vs. other videos (I imagine for both home videos and feature-length movies you'd want to clear the NP list and play only the clicked video). But for TV, you may want to add all selected videos (as they are all from the same show/season/etc.).

No, home movies, clips would have the same requirements as TV as they're short videos, whereas Movies are very different as they're of long length. Actually most of my home movies are a lot shorter than TV shows, which in themselves are shorted than Movies, this is why they are different and why it would be good that MediaMonkey treats them differently.

Agree to disagree, I guess.
