MM slowdown
I have noticed some strange behavior of MM in a multi-pc environment. Initially this seemed a Magic Nodes issue. I've discussed it in the Magic Nodes thread, but there we concluded that it seems to be a more general MM issue.
What I notice is that MM is extremely slow when another PC in our LAN is also running MM (or has been running it earlier that day).
The second MM doesn't have to actually play music or anything. The slowdown goes up to 100 x the time needed for a specific autoplaylist or Magic Nodes mask (eg 43 sec instead of 0.43 sec).
We have multiple PC's with the songs and DB on a NAS. The NAS is part of the problem, but MM seems to cause the biggest part of the slowdown.
I've moved the MM database to a third PC, and then half the slow down disappears (so the slow down is reduced to a factor 50 - still considerable).
Additionally, I have done test with SQLiteSpy to see how this behaves in our environment.
It seems that SQLiteSpy also needs a bit of extra time when 2 instances are running on 2 PC's (both connected to the MM database) but only when simultaneously querying the same table (which is not unreasonable), and still nothing near 100 times as much. And this effect disappears within a minute after the second instance of SQLiteSpy is stopped.
I've repeated some of the tests with MM4, and there the effect seems even more extreme.
I have also noticed that MM slows down considerably if SQLiteSpy is connected to (not querying) the MM database - but only if SQLiteSpy runs on another PC.
More details of my test can be found in the MN thread.
Now I'm not sure what the correct way of posting this issue is?
We use MM a lot, but this issues destroys quit a bit of the fun.
Please let me know if I can do additional tests or could/should provide additional information.
Regards, Willy

I'm not sure what you mean? Do you mean that we could upgrade our LAN? How specifically?
I'm still not sure if this is a MM shortcoming/bug, or if there's something we could/should do.
Any suggestions is appreciated.

Re: MM slowdown
Can you please do few more tests and let us know few examples what were you doing in MM and what info you accessed, if there is change in slowdowns when you do playback on one and DB search/autoplaylists on other and viaversa and when you search/autoplaylists on both of them?

Re: MM slowdown
Peke,
so far I tested two things in particular:
- running a Magic Nodes mask which looks for songs without lyrics, grouped per genre (see MN thread for details)
- opening an autoplaylist 'new' which selects songs that have not been played and have been added the last 6 months: opening the playlist 'new' on 1 PC takes less than half a second on both PC's, but as soon as the other PC is also running MM it takes about 30 seconds
I focus now on the autoplaylist, because this reduces complexity (I think). I have done 2 more tests:
1) Start MM on PC1, start MM on PC2, open autoplaylist 'new' on PC2 and start playing this, go to PC1 and select 'new' on PC1
This has no noticeable impact on the slowdown, it still takes about 30 sec on PC2 (before the playing starts) and on PC1 (while PC 2 is playing it).
2) Start MM on PC1, start MM on PC2, open autoplaylist 'new' on PC2, run to PC1 (10 sec), open autoplaylist 'new' on PC1
Probably it is a little bit slower, 35 sec. I would have to move the PC's so that I can operate them both at the same time to be sure about this. Will do this if this is helpfull.
Thanks for looking at this. Let me know if I can provide additonal information.

Re: MM slowdown
I have a problem. I have a 1terabyte + library that I ma getting into order re: tags and all.
Upon startup, MM has been auto-populating the Now Playing node which is causing MM to slow to a crawl while it performs its initial scanning/monitoring of my music drive. Sometimes MM will end up (not responding) for several minutes.
Once I am able to select remove music from Now playing only, MM speeds up to normal.
I have not noticed in the >Tools>Options>Player>Auto DJ/Now Playing any way to disable the playlist from auto-populating.
Using MM 3..4.1304
External HD H:\Audio Source Files. This is the only folder which I have selected to File Monitor.
What am I missing?
Thanks

Re: MM slowdown
The now playing node just shows whatever tracks were in that list when you shut down MM. So clear the list before closing or change your play now action in the options so you don't add your whole library to the list when you play something.

Re: MM slowdown
And the Auto-DJ options allow you to have MediaMonkey auto-remove tracks from the Now Playing after they have been played.

Lowlander,
could you explain a bit more (or refer to an explanation) what you mean with this auto DJ setting?
I mean what are the possibilities and what is the impact?
I would like to test if this could positively impact our performance.

Re: MM slowdown
It's fairly self-explanatory. At Options > AutoDJ / Now Playing you can set how many previously played tracks are retained in now playing.willyvds wrote:Lowlander,

Re: MM slowdown
The reported issue was a long now-playing list at start up, as a cause of slowness. The solution you mention does not remediate that.
My question is: is there a possibility to clean the now playing list automatically when MM shuts down. So: not just remove the already played songs, but also the yet-to-be-played songs.

Thanks Nohitter, very usefull extension again.
Note that this does NOT solve the initial problem that I started this thread with. Is there any news on that one?

Re: MM slowdown
Yes and no, There is SQLite limitation on number of Calls to Library and that is causing the issue
We are investigating the way on how to override them and Make MM much faster in Multi Access environments especially in Network access. Which means more testing and testing and testing
