I think you're wrong in the assumption that it's a bug.
The whole thing is that the album art needs to be available (applies to external images) for album art to work. Anyway you can move album art up in priority so you could have embedded album art listed as first priority. But there is little reason to keep the same image art as both embedded as external.
What is missing in MediaMonkey is an easy function to move external art to embedded art and vice versa. There is a script that can do this, but I think it can only move from embedded to external. You might want to check out the Scripts and Components forum to see if there is any progress on a script that can automate the moving of external images to embedded images.

Are the songs in the library or not? Do you allow MediaMonkey to update tags in songs when making tag changes?

Disappearing metadata on Play
Dominic,
When this occurs, what happens if:
1) You switch to a different node and then back to the node that is missing the metadata? (I'm wondering if it's a refresh problem) If the bug still occur when you do this, does it do so consistently?
2) You delete the tracks that are missing the metadata from the library, and then browse to them using the My Computer node (in MediaMonkey). Is the metadata still missing?
3) You delete the tracks that are missing the metadata from the library, and then rescan them. Is the metadata still missing?
4) I know you said that the problem occurs randomly, but could it be that it's just specific to a particular set of files?
Thx for all the info.

1. Well, the tags do come back when I return to the node, but only until I next hit play, and it doesn't change the now playing list. And yes, the when I hit play the same tags consistently change/disappear.
2. No, if I do that, that seems to temporarily solve the problem.
3. Yes and no. Basically the same problem happened when I rescanned them back to the library, but this time different tags went missing/changed to something inaccurate, e.g. the artist changed to 00, and the album tag changed to artist-album
4. It is consistently a problem for some files, but not others, but I haven't noticed anything specific or common to these files that have this problem, as opposed to those that don't.
Thanks

Dominic,
So it sounds as if the tagging is working correctly and that it's some sort of database/display/refresh problem.
I can't replicate this, but can you send me a zipped copy of your database along with a list of 10-20 tracks in the db for which the problem consistently occurs?
Thx.

If the .mdb file is the database, then here it is.
This happens consistently for the album 'Satanic Twins' by Of Montreal... which is now listed in the library as 'of montreal-satanic twins' by 00

Added to bug db. Ref#2606.
Still haven't figured it out though...

Dominic,
Could you repost your current database along with a couple of files that exhibit the problem in your current database?

Here, this happens for the files in \my music\fields\7 from the village
I was thinking that maybe it was because they'd been downloaded to that folder using torrents, and sometimes they show up incomplete, with the tags and files only appearing completely accurate once the file had finished downloading. The thing is, that wouldn't explain why the problem would recur if I deleted them from the library and then rescanned them in, nor why it would suddenly start happening now, given I've been doing the same thing since last year I guess.

I recommend setting separate 'download' and 'completed' folders for torrents... Azureus for example can do this and move the completed folders automatically...
and then 'watching' only the 'completed' folder... in this manner you should only get completed files added to your library.
If you need to listen to files while they are still downloading, I would recommend using the 'my computer' node and browsing to your downloads in progress folder.
