MediaMonkey v3.0 just around the corner...

Post by Morten »

... so I thought I would mention some of my biggest requests for this release in pretty much random order:

1. The ability to syncronize your library with your unit. Three options ;

a) Copy content from the device which isn't already in your computer library.
b) Copy content from the computer to the device which the device doesn’t already have (pretty much available in 2.4)
c) Copy content from both sides

2. The ability to browse by album art;

And this in the manner WMP11 does it;

a) With stacking (and ability to add a widescreen photo of the band furthermost viewable).
b) With separate album views in an artist mode. (i.e. WMP11)
c) With separate album views in an album mode. (i.e. WMP11)

3. The ability to tag album art from various web sites built into the program itself;

a) iTunes (available through plug-in)
b) Last.fm
c) Urge (or metaservices.windowsmedia.com)
d) Google and Live.com

4. Easier and more viewable way to manage playlist ;

WMP11 has a great idea which can be adopted quite easily. It should anyway be a way to hide the playlist fast and easy.

5. Use the same system for multiple artists-album as WMP11;

WMP11 hit the nail with this one;

a) You have an artist which the album is sorted via.
b) You have Contributing Artists which tells us who played the song on the record and doesn’t affect the sorting of artists.
c) You have Composer which tells who made the song.

The sites mentioned in point 3 should be calibrated to get the information in this manner through MediaMonkey.

Also notable is the grey area for extra-information which isn’t that important if you’re just browsing music.

6. The ability to play a song faster or slower than normal.

7. Clean up the options dialog. It’s messy and should be made more easy viewable.

8. Easier and more continuity in the way to sync, burn and rip in MediaMonkey ;

In addition to point 1, there should be an easier way to do these things with continuity helping the user finding it’s way through the extensive functions in MediaMonkey. Again, look at WMP11, but you don’t need to make “modes” such which MS has done.

9. Update the design and customization areas;

Although the abilities in MediaMonkey are good, they can be even better. Give us the possibility of extensive skinning of the interface and give us the ability to shrink the player to i.e. my iTunes colored miniplayer (featured in the Artwork section of this forum)

All in all I think we’ll be up for some great changes and I hope both developers and users look and comment on this post whether it’s critique or salvation of my wishlist for MediaMonkey v3.0

Best regards,

That's pretty much a list that's already in many different posts.

Well might be, but this is just a collection of my wishes. I haven't had time looking at other pages than the official wishlist and therefore there might be some repeated ones. On the other hand, better to be safe than sorry!

Yes. It's one of the best library-players out there, but I sure need MediaMonkey with the tagging and organization/ripping.

What about the ability to drag and drop new content from your music folders to the MM library? I've got around 50GB of music, and I've got file monitor activated, but it sucks to rescan the whole library each time I add one or two new songs. It would be good if you were able to drag a new song (file from windows explorer) into the library node and have it automatically added.

Of course, there should be a setting within the options to turn this on/off, so those who don't want it don't whinge about it...

If you let the "File monitor" monitor your collection you don't need to do a rescan since the new files are automatically added to MM.
The only thing is that MM needs to be running while the new files are added.

What about to get the files sorted AND added to your library when dragged over the interface?

M4a; AAC

I think that a good new funcionality is the posibility of compress in m4a or aac. I have a movile with sd-memory and it play m4a and aac. It has the same quality that mp3 but the space is lower and it is very important to a lot of players.

What do you think?

For me, an export function of artists/albums so i can sit in my chair and decide what to play next, without having to use the screen.
My computer is not in the living room, where i play the music, and I used to browse my CDs to decide what to play.
Ideally something with the album art on would be nice.

With the advent of kit like the Netgear 101, this is more urgent, where the search is clearly driven towards what you know is there, instead of browsing a page, and deciding from that.
For example I might see Greenday, and think Oh, yes that would be nice. Otherwise I might have forgotten it is there.
The track list export only goes so far.

Thru scripts you can create any export list you want in any format you want. There are actually a few additional export scripts available in the Scripts and Components forum.
