sorting by "The"
I thought of another idea: sort artists by the first non-THE word. e.g., the killers go under K, not T. that would be spiffy.
How do you handle the indefinite articles "a" and "an"? How ist the artist "A flock of seagulls" sorted? And what about articles of other languages?
Let me suggest this: Make a customizable list of prefixes that are ignored for sorting reasons. Standard delivery of that lists just contains "the", "a" and "an".
Other prefixes can be added by users. And users who want to find "The Police" under "T" can remove "the" from that list again
And mabe the irgnored prefix could be put into paranthesis in the tree so that you don't get confused and immediately see what the part is that is sorted by.

Maybe just add a feature where users can create a list of prefixes they want ignored in the artist node. Even the could have a different meaning in an other language.
An added option to show artist in both with and without prefix locations in the artist node would be nice.
An option to show prefix with , after the artist name would be nice.

Just using a list of prefixes seems too rigid. For example, I have the entry "The Jeff Healey Band". If MM ignores "The", it will use "Jeff", when I really want to see it under "H" for Healey.Lowlander wrote:Maybe just add a feature where users can create a list of prefixes they want ignored in the artist node. Since MM is a database application, how about a new field called "sort name". By default it would equal 'Artist', but it could be changed to anything the user wants.

I agree with the sort name field...the default should be the same as artist, i agree, but there could also be an option where you select the obvious prefixes you dont want...
so:
ARTIST=SMASHING PUMPKINS
SORT NAME=SMASHING PUMPKINS
and
ARTIST=THE CURE
SORT NAME=CURE
as has been mentioned above, the 'default' behaviour could be obtained from the customizable list and if you want to change that as for 'the jeff healey band' you could manually edit the sort name field.
BTW...i really think is very important to use the list...in spanish THE could be either EL, LA, LOS, LAS depending if its femenine/masculine or singular/plural...and i believe this is the case in the rest of latin-languages.
