MM Doesn't recognize CDs (Was: Rip CD - Access violation)

Post by themgnt »

This has been happening to me on and off for a year now.

Currently: Last weekend a ripped a handful of CDs no problem. Today I went to rip another one and all of a sudden I receive an Access Violation on hpCDBurn.dll at address 0C4A3082 or 0BFC3082.

This has happened before. Earlier in the year I went through this and followed some instructions posted here, such as replacing the hpCDBurn.dll file. Nothing worked. I even replaced the drive thinking maybe that had gone bad. Since I was planning on wiping the system I did so and still had the same problem once I restored my core software. Then I did it again, testing MM Cd ripping after each piece of software - this time I never encountered a problem. Until now.

The only thing different since last week is I've installed MonkeyRok. I have uninstalled it and still have the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated. So far the only solution I have found that works is wiping the system and starting fresh. Fortunately, at least, I have a clean backup of a virgin system I can restore back to just in case something like this happens.

EDIT 12/3/10 : Renamed Subject to more accurately describe problem. See Post 4

Which version of MediaMonkey are you using?

I'm on the latest version. I double checked in case there was a newer version available.

Anyway, it seems to have fixed itself. ?! After posting I tried again and it err'd. I kicked off my planned incremental backup of the database and music and went off to do other things. I went back to shut down the PC some time later and gave it one more try and it worked fine. So we'll wait and see what happens next time.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't come across that page, but nothing on there seems related to my problem. This is a fairly fresh install on a PC I only use for watching movies and listening to music so there's little junk on it. There's only one drive. And there's not an issue with playback from cd being bad, it won't even access the drive.

But as I said, seems to be working now so...

Nope. This happening again and has been an ongoing problem for over a year. And I see dozens of posts of similar problems and there never seems to be a solution given.

Here is the problem:
MediaMonkey does not recognize when a commercial, pressed cd is in the drive 99% of the time.
When in MM, I select My Computer > the CD drive and select "Get album info from freedb" it responds with "No Audio CD was found. Please insert a CD."
If I select Rip Audio CD it pops up with an error of "Access violation at address 0b323082 (the varies) in module hpCDBurn.dll.' Read of address 00000000." (which makes sense if there's no cd in the drive. But there is.

The CD is recognized in Windows and is playable and rippable in Exact Audio Copy.

If I go into Windows Explorer, select the CD, right click on a drive and select "Play in Media Monkey" I receive an access violation error as noted above (currently at address 0A7F3082)

Since originally getting this problem I have replaced the CD drive (thinking that was the problem) and wiped and ran a clean install of Windows.

It DID actually work for quite a while, when I was ripping my extensive CD collection.

Media Monkey is on version 3.2.4.1304
Windows is Windows 7, 64bit. Tho I had 32bit XP on the machine and it was experiencing the same issues.
Mobo - Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
CPU - Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM - 4GB
CD Drive - Sony DRU-835A (driver cdrom.sys 6.1.7600.16385). There is no firmware update for this drive. And, as previously noted, this is a new drive on the machine. The previous drive had the same problems.

This is a HTPC so there is minimal software on it. There is the latest CCCP pack (combined community codec pack 10-10-10).

Please advise. I'm really getting sick of this. :)

could this be a rootkit added to the system by the maker of the cd disk to make only playing the cd work and not ripping?

Interesting guess, but it can't be. I can play and rip the CD with Exact Audio Copy. And if I open the CD in Windows Explorer and direct it to play a file in MediaMonkey the Monkey returns with a No CD error.

It's MediaMonkey which won't acknowledge there is a CD in the drive, even when told there is by another application (ie: Windows Explorer).

Update: I installed the debug version of MM and the hpCDBurn.dll Access violation occurs immediately on it's launch. I've sent a debug report. At least I think I did. The error occurs repeatedly until I shut down MM. I'm going to have to revert back to the normal version just to use it.

I am having exactly the same problem. For the last year I have been having random failure to recognize CD's and the access violation error when ripping. Sometimes it would work for awhile then random fail. The whole time Windows Media Player and other programs have no problems recognizing and ripping the very CD's on the same machine. I have contacted support on several occassions and they have provided the same non-support that you see in this forum thread. Clearly, there is a serious bug in MM that is not being taken seriously. Since I installed the new version a couple of days ago, MM is no longer randomly failing to recognize CD's, it has completely shut down its ability to do so. I am running Windows 7 64 bit and have a plain vanilla CD rom drive on a machine made by PC Audio Labs, the leader in music systems. This is getting so serious I am starting to explore alternatives to MM as there seems to be no solution working.

your issue is not ignored every one of the members here in the forum that read a bug keep it in mind when they use
their copy of mediamonkey. and if anything happens close to that they then report it also and if they get the same bug that you have, they then come to your thread if they can find it, and or make a new one confirming your bug.

and if your issue is read by the developers they too keep it in mind and try and find the answer to it.

you need to keep in mind as i have said before here. mm 3.x is not made for windows 7 it was made on windows xp and or vista and they have been patching it to work on windows 7, the new version of mm 4 is being made to work on windows 7 with out alot of the issues that you members with windows 7 have been reporting over the last year.

mediamonkey 4 is close to a testing release date, you have to wait a little long but i think they are fixing your issue in mm 4 before they release it for testing.. thats what they do a lot here before they make a new stable version they read the forum's bug reports and make sure they have them fixed. so same would go to say that they do that for the testing updates of the new version.

last time they released the first test version of mm 3 it was still before christmas but kind of just before on christmas eve,

...and then, just as I was going to shut down the PC for the night I decided to try and it started working. So I had to stay up an extra hour ripping the pile of CDs I've been trying to rip.

Can I expect any sort of acknowledgment on my Debug submission? I'm not 100% certain it actually went through (tho I did get a confirmation message). Thing is, as soon as you clear the Debug window the error comes up immediately again, and continues to pop up until you kill the program.

Every time a new version of MM comes out I install it in hopes it fixes the problem, but no such luck.

You're not going to get any feedback on a debug log unless you submit a ticket.

I installed the latest version of MM last night, everything went well until I put a normal CD audio disc into the DVD drive, it just would not play any CD's, and I did have the correct option ticked for CDA CD Audio.

I thought perhaps it was just me but I see others experience the same kind of problem.

I have gone back to version 2.5.5.998 where it plays CD's with no problems.

What is the latest on this issue?

its only an issue on some peoples systems.

no trouble with monkey here playing cdroms from the store that are pressed from the factorys.

most the others here are also having no trouble with it.

i suggest it is an hardware issue with the cd drives you have that is causing the trouble.

going back to mm 2 is a mistake unless you kept it in the computer when you installed mm 3. like i have it mm 2 in its own folder and mm 3 in its own folder i can use both that way.

there is no way to go back to mm 2 if you over installed mm 3 on to mm2, unless you do a total remove of 3 and run all the
system cleaners. then reinstall mm 2.

but mm3 has some issues i agree but i for one am not getting this cdrom issue with store bought ones.
you might have an old out dated driver for your cdrom drive? or you got a new cdrom drive that mediamonkey don't know about.

I un-installed MM3, re-booted then went back to my MM2 exe file and installed MM2 again, and it's back working as MM2 with no problems.

I would never have installed 3 over 2, not sure if that would have been possible, but I take your word that it is.

As for the CD drive, I use Windows 98, and it doesn't use any particular driver for that operating system.

It could be an operating system issue, be interesting if anyone using 98 and MM3 if they experience the same issue with playing official CD's on MediaMonkey 3.
