however when MM writes the migrated data back to the tag
Folk;Rock/Pop becomes
Folk/Rock/Pop
i.e. 3 genres instead of 2

Worse is:

Tango;Tango
Tango;Vals
Tango;Milonga

(that's three species of genus Tango) which MM writes back as

Tango
Tango/Vals
Tango/Milonga

Hence the request for an interim solution before release here

MASA enters onto the exception list the selected text if any, else the leftward text less any existing exceptions and terminal separators.

Just thought of an easier interim, interim solution.
Just in the Add/Rescan Tracks to the library routine
Convert ";" to either "|" or "," in multiple field tags before adding to the libary.

PLEASE no. The 3.0 ';' messup can by solved only by less character abuse, not more.

Users of MM will have no ";" in these tags

Totally untrue. MM users /do/ have ';' in these tags - these are the users suffering the messup that needs fixing.

But Users migrating from other applications will not have tags misinterpreted and split.

The correct way to achieve this is for MM to preserve the user tags intact (as it did in MM 2.5) and then upon /display/ to do any multi-artist/genre presentation in accord with the separator/exception list, as proposed.

This was in relation to the interim solution which was just a choice of replacement for ";" not for multiple separators.

Fair enough, but even for a single separator ', ' is a reasonable choice.
