Playing only one copy of a song

Post by dchall8 »

I'm having so much fun finally getting the tags right on my music that I've forgotten to play it. As the tags get corrected, MM is doing its thing and moving music from folder to folder. Now I'm getting many "copies" of the same music loading into the proper folder. (YAY!) So for example rather than having "Diamonds and Rust" filed under Joan Baez, Jaon Baez, joan baez, and Joan Bayes, now I have multiple copies in the proper Joan Baez folder.

Someday I need to get rid of the multiple copies. Ultimately I want to have one copy of all my music on an external drive and backed up to one other drive, but for now I'd just like to listen to the music only once. If I go to the Joan Baez folder do I have to listen to "Diamonds and Rust" five times or can I set something so it only plays one time and goes to the next unplayed song?

you are in need of fixing the tags.

if the singers name is misspelled on several copys just delete those copys.
and fix the name if they are different versions of the songs. make the singers name correct and add a number to the song title if they did more then one version of it.

now with that done for the songs just use the playlists node and make playlists you only make the list with songs you want to hear so it will then play them when you right click on the playlist then click play now.

I think yes. You'll want to avoid RCs suggestion of deleting copies if, like me, those are in different albums that you want to keep intact

Not in MM ... yet. MM will surely address this in a future version, because it is a must for amy program targetting large libraries e.g. see Spotify and its solution... though MM will need a user-definable rule for copy detection.

Meanwhile, perhaps someone can make a workaround script that e.g. lets a MM filter show only the preferred instance within each group.

Thanks but No. That removes and replaces the actual track files of the dispreferred instance in each group.

What I want is to keep the files, just most of the time filter them out of view.

I believe it also has an option to keep the files but redirect the playcount data all to one track.

Doubtless, but I see no option for the requested function. Being filter out dispreferred copies.

Could you not use custom filters to achieve that?

I'd love too... but I can't see any allowed filter criterion that could do the job. The best idea I've come up with is "Playlist is not..." a playlist that contains all dispreferred copies... but still something has to compute that playlist. Could a script to that? I.e. include all but the highest rated track of each group of tracks haveing the same Title, Artist and Year?

Actually you are incorrect, it does have an option to link the master to the audio files as well as to create asx files. I use this script to link to my additional formats.

And where is the option to filter out dispreferred copies?

In the option sheet you can select either the maximum bitrate or extension to be the selection for the master tracks. It doesn't have any more criteria than that, but I do not know what other criteria you would want to use. You could post a kindly worded request in the forum topic, I am sure Zvezdan would consider it if it is possible. But you are script averse so....

And how does one then filter out the other tracks from the track list?

I think you should install the script first before judging about it or at least you should post question into the related forum. The mentioned script has an option to remove duplicated tracks from the track list indeed, they are removed only from the track list as the name of the menu option applies, not from the database nor it deletes physically audio files. You could use that option even if you didn't create a table of redirections, the criteria for filtering would be a maximal bitrate and/or a list of extensions (however, if you have created a table of redirections then master tracks would be kept even if they don't satisfy mentioned criteria). If you think that the script should have more criteria for filtering, please let me know.

By the way, the mentioned script have an automatically updated playlist containing all redirected tracks (i.e. duplicates without masters) and you could create an auto-playlist or filter using criterion Playlist is not that_playlist.

EDIT: Another by the way, if you don't want to create redirections, the new version of the Magic Nodes script (v3.x) has a possibility to create playlists and there is already a predefined mask "Tracks without duplicates and only one track which has duplicates" in the Tracks group. You could move that mask/node to the Playlist branch and create a new auto-playlist or filter using criterion Playlist is mentioned_playlist.

dchall8,

I'm not sure if you've fixed this, but here's what I have done.

I have a lot of compilation cds and of course when you do this you get a lot of duplicates. Some are the same song, some are different versions by the same artist. You have to make the decision on how you want to treat these.

For the same song by the same artist, I choose the one I want to have in the library and in any other duplicates I enter "dup" in the Custom 2 field. I can leave all the dups in the library and when I create an auto playlist, I filter out the dups. I also created a filter with a criteria to include only tracks without dup in Custom 2, then I don't have to look at all the dups.

Hope this helps.
