MM5 Repeats Last 10 Secs of Track [#17180]

Post by MattTown »

Hi, I've managed to pin down a strange playback behavior, where the edit of a track database field can cause MM to replay the last 10 secs of a track. This is more of an annoyance than a bug, but a music player should be able to play a track through without unintended interruptions or repeats.

Context: Main panel is showing Main Music>All Tracks. Left panel (tree view?) is closed. Right panels are opened and behaving normally. Audio Output is listed as Mediamonkey DirectSound output.

Trigger: Double click on a track to play it. Open a database field to edit - I'm generally editing the Comments field - and make a change that would require a write on close. Either let the track play through or move the play control to 00:15 secs and let it play forward. When it passes 00:10, close the edited field.

Observed behavior: The play counter jumps back to 00:20 secs while the audio stream continues to the end of the track uninterrupted. The play counter proceeds forwards and when it gets to 00:10 again it replays the last 10 secs of the track. What you hear is <end of track><brief silence><last 10 secs of track again>. Note that my limited testing only has this happen about 3 out of five times, and I haven't been able to pin down the trigger time window much.

Again, this is more of an annoyance and won't affect anyone who is just playing music without getting into the data. However, it is strange behavior and might be a factor in other reports of strange playing behavior in MM. My perception is that a similar behavior affected MM4 as well.

Cheers

Please update last Alpha-Version - link is in my signature.
Then check TOOLS> Options ... Player ... Audio Output (plug ins)

Thanks Erwin. I only have one production system, not a test environment, and am reluctant to hazard my data with a non-released version.
Besides, I'm not sure whether you are offering this advice to me on the basis that it would let me provide a debug data set to the devs, or whether it would fix the problem. Based on what dtsig observed, the latter isn't the case.

Maybe dtsig could confirm what Audio Output he is using on his 2656 installation.

Which File Type(s) and what Output Plugin is this happening with? And does switching output plugin remediate the problem?

Hi Lowlander, thanks for the response.

Files are MP3s encoded at 256K.
Audio Output plugin is Mediamonkey Direct Sound. Config: all ticked - Enable HW acceleration, smooth pause, smooth seek, smooth stop.
I tested again with MMDS, and the repeat behaviour was again as described.
I also tried the MMDS output with all of the configuration options deselected, didn't change the repeat behaviour.
Lowlander wrote: Sat Jul 23, 2022 12:18 pm And does switching output plugin remediate the problem?
Changed output to Mediamonkey WASPI output - repeat behaviour still there.

So, no, changing the audio output plugin doesn't change the repeat behaviour - the problem is presumably upstream of the output plugin.

Cheers
Matt

And here's a bizarre twist for your information. I've just played a short song (1:47) and with a field edit near the end it started repeating the last 10 secs again. However, this time when it reached zero, the time elapsed counter at bottom right started counting back up again. This has happened once or twice before so it is rare but not unique. Bizarrely, the time played counter at bottom left also progressed upwards while the track repeated, and was at least 1 minute beyond the DB track length when I last looked at it.

Tried playing the next track and MM threw an application error:
  • address 0040580D in module 'MediaMonkeyEngine.exe'. Write of address 00A6FE56.
Restarted MM, while the audio of the repeated last 10 secs kept going. MM restarted but balked at a Port In Use error. Track end repeat continued. Closed MM, track repeat continued.

Fired up Task Manager, reported no running apps but MM was still present in the process list with 28% of the CPU and 269Mb of memory. Last 10 sec loop continued to repeat throughout the process.

Rebooted computer, MM started normally.

I've just played a short song (1:47) and with a field edit near the end it started repeating the last 10 secs again.
Never have I edited fields while the same song is playing.
Now I tested it and got the same error.
Changed tags are written back - this of course has an impact.

Further test: I play a specific song and edit some fields in an OTHER song - no problems.

And what does that tell me: don't edit fields when playing the same song. I'm sticking to it.

Output-Plugin: Mediamonkey Direct Sound
...YES: Enable hardware acceleration, Smooth pause , seek, stop

Good plan, but capability to re-tag the currently playing track seems a basic requirement.

I've been editing tracks while playing for years and found that MM is always reliable writing to the track tags and database. While this error does occasionally happen it is not frequent enough to cause me a problem (unlike some of the quirks of the inline editing interface) and I usually only have to restart Mediamonkey. I'm just reporting it because it's not a good look for the widespread adoption of MM outside enthusiasts.
