Turn off auto Album art/lyrics lookup [#19253]

Post by boober »

I'm finally digging into the big mess that has been the update to MMW5. Since the lyrics lookup doesn't return the correct or even coherent lyrics most of the time, I'd like to just turn it off (along with all auto-lookup).

However, when I go to Tools > Options > Library > Metadata lookup, I'm unable to remove all fields from the Audio metadata list. The only item still in that list right now is Album Summary, but MM is still trying to retrieve lyrics when each track plays.

Is there a way to turn this off?

I'm on MMW 5.03.26.27.

Thanks for any help.

I don't know if there is any solid way to turn off lyric lookup.
You can turn it off in Tools > Options > Library > Metadata, as you say, but this seems to get overridden in some circumstances.

The lack of clarity can be seen in the help text.
Note, that MediaMonkey will still lookup Artist images, Album Artwork and Lyrics even when the option to do is disabled. This takes place in certain locations when the information is displayed. It won't happen in the Grid views (for Artist and Album Artwork) or the Preview window (for Artwork and Lyrcis), or for the Playing node set to Album Art (for Lyrics) in which case a lookup button will be presented. The results of these lookups are not stored in the files or the MediaMonkey database or saved in any way.
The only thing that is clear (to me), from that, is that it's complicated.

FWIIW:
  • I have lyrics lookup turned off.
  • I see that the "lookup button" is displayed in the Playing panel ... before I turned the option off I saw the Lyrics being looked up and displayed into the Playing node ... so far, it looks ok
  • but if my layout has the Lyrics panel on display, I can see lyrics are still being looked up .. ?
My guess (hope?) is that if the Lyrics panel is on display, this overrides the option settings.

But I am not sure whether or not they are being still being looked up when no one is looking, ie. Lyrics panel is not on display.

MM5 sometimes seems to think that it is an AI. eg. maybe I have lyrics stored for some tracks that are significant to me. Where available I want to see those lyrics, but don't want MM5 looking up lyrics on the fly. ... We should be able to that.

BTW. My overall view of MM5 is that it is a great update.
It takes some getting used to to, and the migration documentation sux, but I like MM4 a lot better than MM5.

There are things about MM5 that work well and are an upgrade. However, the things that don't work well — or don't work at all — make it enough of a hassle that I don't recommend MM to anyone anymore. I really can't until some of these interface issues are resolved.

I have found the case where it fails for album art https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=19253 Please let me know if you find another case(s).

As for Lyrics only If you are using Playing view with Lyrics then they are Auto Searched in all other cases I have found you are presented with link to search lyrics and they are not auto searched.

I have all options under "Background metadata lookup" unchecked.

Under Auto-tagging > Metadata > Audio, I only have Album Summary as a selected lookup option. Artwork is unchecked.

I have the lyrics window displayed above Playing, and MMW5 searches for lyrics on any track that does not yet have lyrics saved to the track.

If this is intentional behavior despite the Auto-tagging settings, can it be requested as an option to completely disable lyrics lookup in a future version?

Edit: Thanks again, Peke, for your response to my troubleshooting. Much appreciated.

The other case is when the Lyrics panel is visible. ... This is another situation where the Tools|Options specification is overridden.

I don't think that this is a good thing.
It takes all control away from a user who:
  • has local lyric tags for all tracks where they are considered relevant and of interest
  • has given some screen space to the lyrics panel, so that lyrics are displayed whenever one of those tracks is played
  • and who doesn't want to make MM5 to make 8 (!) separate Internet lyric searches whenever they play any track whose lyrics they are not interested in, or is just an instrumental track with no lyrics
This is quite different to the situation that which you describe. ie. the override to the lyric is controllable by the User ... ie. they specifically configured the Playing panel to auto-search the Internet for unknown lyrics.
