Don't see Media Monkey when service is running

Post by LINYbob »

I'm running MM 5.0.4.9690 on Win10.

When I have MM open on the desktop I can see the MM server in VLC->Local network-> Universal P&P. (that is my client I use for testing - I see MM in other clients as well).

When I exit out of MM the server disappears from the list in VLC. I should be seeing it since the service is running.

In Windows I see Media Monkey running as a Background Process service when I close the desktop app.

I am guess this is some sort of permission problem, but I'm not sure what. Or maybe it is not.

I was running this laptop in a different WiFi network for several months and everything was fine. I have moved the laptop to a totally new WiFi network, but it is the same laptop. Same logon accounts, etc.

I don't know what to do or how to troubleshoot this.

Any help would be appreciated!

Did you setup the MediaMonkey Service with the same Windows User as you're running MediaMonkey? MediaMonkey Media Sharing settings are tied to the Windows User.

Yes I did. I even uninstalled the service in MM and reinstalled it and it asked me for the password of the user (which is the one I am logged in as now). I also verified the password is correct. It is.

If the app is exited, I see the server in VLC, then Music and subfolders Artists, Genre, Album, etc, but clicking on those doesn't do anything. They don't expand. If I start the app they expand and I can drill down.

I'm not sure why I am even going this far now! I haven't done anything except reinstall the service.

I'm not sure what version of MediaMonkey you're running. The current release is 5.0.4.2692 or the latest beta is 5.1.0.2820.

I am running V 5.0.4.2692

I rebooted the laptop and in VLC there was no MM service listed. But it was listed as running in Task Manager.

I start the MM app and the service is then listed in VLC and I can drill down to individual songs.

If I exit the MM app, the service disappears in VLC, then quickly reappears. I can drill down to Music, then Album, Genre, Location, etc but clicking on those to go further doesn't do anything.

I can confirm this behavior in 5.0.4.2692, just tested it.

Service was already installed and i used this for a while now for phone. All good.
Just opend VLC with only MM service running.
- Lookup OK.
- Playlist show up OK.
- Playing a song gives this error:
Input cannot be opened:
VLC cannot open MRL 'http://IPADRESS:11460/%Playlist%5C25974 ... =52709.mp3' cannot open file. Check logbook for details.

With MM5 running, the song play without any issues.
When shutting down MM while playing a song in VLC player, will cause the MM service to go to stopped state.
Needed to manual restart the service.

I am using MediaMonkey on my Retro Systems, using the latest Beta build on Windows 11. Managing ~54k files

That is correct. I discovered that drilling down to the song level crashes the server. You then need to go into the Windows Services and Start the app.

Please try with the latest MediaMonkey 5.1 beta. Does it fail too?

You can install as Portable in a separate location.

That did not help.

1.) I installed it as Portable
2.) Opened up MM beta app
3.) Opened up VLC as my client
4.) In VLC, I could see MM in Local Network -> UPNP list
5.) I was able to drill down to Music -> Album -> A -> album1 -> songs listed (GOOD! Expected!)
6.) I exited MM beta app
7.) Opened up Services app
8.) Media Monkey Service is running as user myself.
9.) Opened up VLC
10.) In VLC, I could see MM in Local Network -> UPNP list
11.) Expanding nodes of MM, I was able to open up Album -> "A" and got a list of albums
12.) In Services app, I right click MM service - only Start is an option. Prior to opening up "A", Restart was always an option
12a.) Apparently the service crashed when I drilled into "A" and got list of albums
13.) In VLC, Double clicking an album name causes the highlighted bar to scroll down the list of albums one at a time, No albums are opened
14.) ( I can't even open MM Beta anymore, by the way.)

Sorry, I answered the question itself without taking the problem into account. Portable Install can't be run as a service. Only full installs can do this.

So, presumably you're still using the Service from the original install.

One other thing - I think the service is actually the one from MM 5.0.4.2692. I rebooted the laptop and the service is started up upon reboot. In Services, the Properties is actually showing the 2692 folder.

I can't get it to exit and disappear. So there may be a conflict with the beta version of the service. I don't know how to get that one running, so I think my test was actually testing the 2692 service. Sorry.

Yes - I just saw your reply.

Hi,
You need to uninstall Service from 2962 and install it from beta version of MM 5.1.

Just curious are your files is in common folder or they are in User folders so Service that have limited access to files actually really can't access the files and thus can't parse to DLNA client eg. I had such issue when playing files of my NAS that have user login information (your point 8. should handle that, but I do not trust windows there), which service do not have.
