Incomplete and missing metadata being imported to Library [#22253][#22230]

Post by mlg238 »

Macbook Model = 14" Apple M3 Pro chip with 18gb memory
Mac OS = Tahoe 26.5.1 (25F80)

Hi,

Let me start by saying that I am really excited to see that a Mac version of MM is now available, so as soon as I found out earlier today I downloaded it straight away, bought a Lifetime Gold license and imported my music library of 5,067 MP3 and FLAC files. I have found an initial bug that is detailed below and will report any other things that I find when I come across them.

This is a strange one, as the metadata for various fields is either not being added, is the wrong value or is being truncated to 30 characters. Only 214 of the 5,067 files in my library have been imported correctly with nothing missing. The fields that are affected on the ones imported incorrectly are...

Empty fields with no values in them = Disc #, Conductor, Genre, Lyrics, Grouping, Artwork
Album Artist - when it's populated, it contains the same value as the 'Artist' field rather than the 'Album Artist' value (which is always different in my case), but some records are blank and the ones over 30 characters have been truncated.

I have tried to add screenshots to this post using the instructions in the 'Forum rules / Using the forum / Attaching screenshots' post, but I keep getting the error message "You don’t have rights to post image, email or url links that are external to this domain" when submitting despite inserting a space into the URL as suggested. I can email screenshots to you though if you need to see them.

I have imported my library into iTunes to make sure that the files do actually contain the metadata and they have all been imported successfully with all of the blank values detailed above showing correctly, so there is no issue with the MP3/FLAC files themselves.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks
Matt

Thanks for the reply Peke.

I did read that post about how to include images in the message, but I tried various things to get it to work and nothing did. I've tried a few other things this time and have corrupted the URL enough that it allowed me to send this message, so that's a win.

This is a screenshot of 3 files in my MM library on windows which shows all of the problematic fields mentioned in my initial post with the correct values in them...

Image

...and this is a screenshot of the same files after being imported to my MM library on the Mac where you can see that the data is either missing, incorrect or truncated...

Thanks

Try to use CTRL+S on PC to Write tags to files and them compare them to see if there is a difference?

Hi Peke,

I took a set of 11 MP3's in my Windows MM library and did CTRL+S as suggested. I then imported those 11 MP3's into my Mac MM library and the problem with the missing and incorrect data still exists. I also imported those same 11 MP3's into my iTunes library and most of the data was correct for them, so I can't see that it's a problem with the tags on the MP3. I'm happy to send the MP3's to you if you wanted to check them and do some testing yourself? A summary of what I can see is below...

This is the properties screen of one of the MP3's I did CTRL+S on in my Windows library showing all of the fields exactly as they have been for years...

Image

This is the properties screen of that same MP3 in my Mac library. As you can see, the 'Title' and 'Album' fields have been truncated to 30 characters. The 'Album Artist' has been changed to 'Various' (which seems to be a value that MM has decided on itself as I never use that in my library). The 'Genre', 'Disc #', 'Conductor', 'Original Date' and 'Lyricist' fields are empty...

Image

And this is the properties screen of that same MP3 in my iTunes library which doesn't have all of the fields that MM has, but you can see that the 'Title' and 'Album' fields haven't been truncated and the 'Album Artist' and 'Disc #' fields are showing the correct values...

Image

Thanks
Matt

ps. As a further test, I've also just added those 11 MP3's to my MM library on a secondary windows laptop that I have and they all imported 100% correctly with all of the tags populated and even the album art and lyrics populated, so I'm absolutely sure that there are no issues with the tags on the MP3's themselves

FYI - absolutely love MM, have been using it for years and excited to get a Mac Version.

I feel like my bug is along the same lines as this issue so I'm adding to this thread, hopefully that is the correct thing to do.

Macbook Model = 16" MacBook Pro Apple M1 Max chip with 32gb memory
Mac OS = Tahoe 26.5.2 (25F84)
MediaMonkey 2027.0.0.3515 (2026-07-01)

When I'm looking at my various music folders, in each of the folders there are 10%-30% of files where no metadata is loaded at all, not event the title or the artist. I did confirm that all the metadata is there for these files. When I look at these folder thru the windows version then all the files show correctly.
Also, on the files that don't show any data if I try to edit some of the data I receive an error saying the files is "read-only" but the file isn't and in the windows media monkey I'm able to edit the files no problem,

Mac screenshot showing 2 files missing all metadata
Image

Windows screenshot showing the same folder and all the files have the metadata.
Image

Screenshot showing first error screen if I try to edit the files missing data in the macOS MM.
Image

Screenshot showing if I select in the previous screen that I want to edit the read only status, it comes back with this error saying it wasn't able to change it.
Image

(Had to place spaces in url for it to post)
Thank you for all your hard work.

Hi,
Are you able to play those two files, based on Images it closely looks like MMM do not have access to files to be read fully.

Maybe it would be interesting to see if maybe problem is in "é" nd other diacritic characters?

If none helps, as only those two files are problematic if none helps it could be useful to send that file to us thru support ticket as DL links.

Hi,

First yes, I am still able to play the file.

And second, you are 100% correct, in my case the bug is caused by the diacritic character in the filename. Removing the diacritic character in the filename allowed all the metadata to be displayed.
There were diacritic characters in the metadata and that didn't seem to cause any issues and MM displayed them in the metadata no problem once I removed them from the filename.
I tested this with other files in other folders and all had the same response, removing the diacritic characters in the filenames fixed the issue.
I went and tested a bit further by adding diacritic characters to the folder name. This caused the issue of all the files in the folder not showing any metadata, even if the filename itself didn't have any diacritic characters but the file path did then it had the same bug.

My currently active music library is mostly latin music so I have a lot of diacritic characters  .

Great job spotting the issue so quickly 8)
Thanks again,

Mark

Hi,
Thank you for answers I have added it as https://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=22253 fir Immediate fixing.

Let me explain good and bad news ;)
Good:
- As file plays it means that Playback engine correctly parse file
- As Diacritics show correctly in tags means tag reading works as it should

Bad:
- Looks like full path+filename parser still have issues parsing correct filenames to metadata engine (best guess is that multiplatform source code do not correctly work on both systems in Unicode OS behavior setups)

Finally, last bad news is that you will need to be patient till we fix it (with priority) and I really hope it will be in next MMM release.

Meantime It could be useful to send us debug logs according to viewtopic.php?t=109505 so that we can easily locate where the issue is.

Lastly, thank you very much for all the info. These kind of feedback really help us to improve.

Thanks for the response.

Sorry, took a couple days to respond but I sent the log as per the instructions and I hope it helps.

No worries about the patience, I completely understand that this is still a Beta versions that will have bugs and they will take time to fix. I'm just glad that it was quick to find the issue and that way hopefully it will be not to difficult of a fix.

I did see the Ventis log on this issue and if I'm reading it correctly your programers already fix it for the next release, which is awesome if that is the case.

Hi Peke,

The link you provided takes us to the 'MMW 2027 Test builds' download page, whereas we are interested in the Mac version. Looking at the 'MediaMonkey for macOS 2027 test builds' page, the latest download link is from the start of July, so is the latest build not available for the Mac version yet?

Thanks
Matt
