auto-tag from filename and vice versa

I know it's possible to get tags from the filename but is it possible using mediamonkey or any other program to rename files based on info contained in the tags using filters?

I ask because I'm trying to access my mp3's via programs which don't necessarily read tags and unfortunately many of them are simply named "track 1" etc.

You can do it on just selected tracks. Select them, then Tools > Auto-organize.
