what do you guys do about duplicate songs?

Post by Danzig »

as in on separate records or "best of" compilations??

i hate it... i'll have a 5 star song that has been played 10 times and then there's the exact same song and i rated it 5 stars too but its only been played 2 times... that's dumb cause technically the song has really been played 12 times but one was on the original CD and the other song was on the "best of" cd for that band...

normally i don't keep "best of" CDs... but this is just an example..
for example, the song "Saw Red" by Sublime is both on Second Hand Smoke and on Robbin' the Hood... what do you guys do in this situation??

this is annoying me quite a bit...

Shrug, I don't let it bother me. I just keep them all because I'd rather have a complete set for each album/etc than have to manage some special case scenarios for each track thats on multiple albums.

Funny I'm the exact opposite - I don't want to have the exact same file twice.
So I usually keep the version from the earliest album it appears on and delete the others.

In fact, until recently if I ripped a "best of" compilation, I would break the album apart and tag each song with the original album name/art it appeared on!

But it's true that every now and then when I listen to a "complete" album
and find one or two tracks missing, it bothers me...

It would be great to assign more than one album to a particular track butguess that's not possible (and it would make things confusing)

I don't like have duplicates of the same album (unless there is a large difference like remastered/different track arrangement/versions/lengths/bonus tracks etc), but compilations/greatest hits don't bother me at all.

In fact I tend to collect compilations as equally often as full albums.

I don't mind duplicates if they have come from differing albums etc. I would leave them in my library but differentiate by either downloading that albums cover art or scanning the compilation album (e.g) into my system.

I then treat the dupe's as individual songs. Hardly ever have I had the same song play twice in a row - if ever when using various random playbacks.

I keep all the duplicates, but playcounts are a mere fun statistic for me, nothing of importance. It does mean that some songs exist 5+ times in my library.

I'm with Tekno on this. I rip the all the CD's dupes and all. Because I only play songs with 3 stars or more, I give the dupe a 2 star rating, even if it is Layla.

I keep complete albums, too. For duplicates, one track gets a rating (between 1/2 stars and 5 stars) and the others get 0 stars. I mostly play music based off of autoplay lists, and one filter on every list is to not select tracks with a 0 rating. These tracks would only get played if a specific album was selected that contains tracks with a 0 star, like a soundtrack, greatest hits, or compilation CD.

By simply using strict organizing rules, I have no problem with duplicate songs, I'll detect duplicates before they get in to the library.

Simple really, just use the same Auto Organize masks all the time.

'Same song' on several albums do not bother me either. Often they are mixed differently anyways, so they are not really the same song. I do not mind to have the choice of picking the 'variation' I like best, and 'killing' albums by taking them out is not even an option. It's not like HDD space is expensive any more.

man this really bothers me!!

i used to rate the second song a 0 so it wouldn't get played but the thing is i seem to have a lot of different songs from different artists that are exactly the same, no remixing or anything...

i'm working on some stuff and organizing my music and making statistics etc using mysql and giving a 0 to the second song really screws up the avg rating for the entire album...

i know i'm really nitpicky about this though... :)

thx Bex that script seems pretty cool i'm gonna give it a try!
