1345: Inconsistencies in naming [#7272 #7492]

Post by pietzke »

Just a small thing, that's already been in MM 3:

rightclick a file -> Auto-Tag from Web... -> opens the window named "Auto-Tag from Web"
open Track Properties -> Mouseover same botton as above says "Get properties from Amazon" instead of "Auto-Tag from Web..." ->also opens the window named "Auto-Tag from Web"

Another issue is "type". There's a Track Property called "type" containing information whether it's music, video, podcast etc.
Then there's a field called "type" to chose as a column containing the ending of the file such as mp3, avi, wma, wmv...

Both are connected as its likely than an mp3 is of the type music, and an avi wouldn't be an audiobook. I think both for themselves make a proper description of its content. I don't know how to handle, but I would suggest to rename one of them. What do others think?

Since this talks about inconsistencies in naming (though mainly referring to two titles for one feature or two features under one title), I thought I would throw this one out there that I've been meaning to mention. This is more of a capitalization inconsistency however. We have "Show Art Browser with Details" and "Show Art With Details" the latter of which was "Show (Album) Art with Details" in MM3.

I think "type" column could be renamed to "format".

I agree.

I also think that Filename column should not contain extension since that information is redundant in such context (it is already displayed in Path and Type columns) and it is more difficult to copy/paste just that, you know, the file name. Or they should implement similar thing as Mp3tag and Total Commanded with option "Select only the file name when renaming (not the extension)" -> when you click on some Filename of some track, only filename part should be selected initially, without dot and extension.

This has been done for years in Gnome and other Linux window managers. Recently, Windows 7 (maybe Vista too, but I'm not sure) also implemented this. And I must say it's a simple but great feature, even though I don't see me selecting+copying filename in MM's tracklist very often.

+1 for the suggestion.

Yeah, you are right, I just tried Windows Explorer in Vista. I didn't notice that before since I am not using it.

Just one more litle thing to add:

The Properties Window still says Track Properties, although it contains Vide files aswell now. I'd suggest to just call it properties.

Agreed.

So it looks like we got a lot of potential tickets in this thread.

I prefer to have the extension included in the Filename. Just like Filename is included in Path.

@Lowlander and Mizery_Made:

I agree but what do you think of this solution:

Seems ideal to me. And as a added bonus it's consistent with Windows Explorer on Windows7.

That's fine by me and yes, Windows Vista + does this too.

Thanks. Tracked at:

and
http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=7492

Type has already been renamed to 'extension'.
