About Media File Properties

By default MediaMonkey saves tags in the MediaMonkey database as well as in the tags of the media files themselves. Shown below is a table of all properties stored in the MediaMonkey database vs. which properties are stored in media files tags.
- Yes indicates that the information is included in the media file tag (as well as the MediaMonkey database) ^.
- No indicates that it isn't saved to the media file tags and is only saved in the MediaMonkey database.
- Non-Standard indicates that it is saved in the media file tags, but that no clear standard exists for how this field should be tagged, and consequently it may not be readable by other media players.
- Tags enclosed in [] square brackets are read but not written.
- When a playing file is edited the tags are saved to the file until the file has finished playing.

† Applicable only for Video and TV.
‡ For MPC and APE Tracks, APEv1 tags are read if APEv2 tags are absent.
¤ DSF has standard ID3v2 tags at the end of the file, AIFF has standard ID3v2 tags in "ID3 " chunk. MediaMonkey supports also native AIFF chunks "NAME" for title, "AUTH" for artist, "(c) " for copyright and "ANNO" for comment.
MediaMonkey can read non-standard "ID3 " chunk with ID3v2 tags from DFF (DSDIFF), it also can read title from "DIIN"-"DITI" chunk, artist from "DIIN"-"DIAR" chunk and comment and encoder from "COMT" chunk.
# AAC does not support tags.
^ MediaMonkey can't tag MKV files. MKV tagging sometimes requires the whole MKV file to be rewritten each time tags are changed.
& File Explorer is know to have buggy and non-standard tagging of FLAC files and we recommend not using File Explorer to tag FLAC files. && MediaMonkey reads both COMMENT and DESCRIPTION for FLAC files into Comment. On writing FLAC tags MediaMonkey removes DESCRIPTION and writes Comment to only COMMENT.
Other Library Elements
There are items that are only saved to the MediaMonkey database or settings files, but not stored in any other format. Some items can be exported (but won't be updated by MediaMonkey on changes) and the database file itself can be backed up.

| AutoPlaylists | AutoPlaylists are Library constructs that can't be exported. Tools > Create Reports > Export all Playlists from the Main Menu will export AutoPlaylists, but as a static Playlist instead of a dynamic Criteria based Playlist. |
| Podcasts | A list of Podcasts subscriptions can be exported as an .OPML file via Edit > Podcasts > Export subscribed Podcasts from the Main Menu. |
| Sync | Device profiles are stored in the database file. Sync settings (excluding the Sync List) can be exported from MediaMonkey |
| Configuration | Sync, Collections, and other configuration data are stored to the MediaMonkey.ini settings file, the database file, and the registry and cannot be exported from MediaMonkey. |
| Type | Type is a MediaMonkey only tag and is only stored in the MediaMonkey database. |
| Custom Tag names | Custom Tag names are only stored in the MediaMonkey database. The custom values however are saved to the tags for many file types as shown in the table above. |
| Play History | Playcount, Skip Count and Last Played are only stored in the MediaMonkey database. |
